Does anyone know if there's a way to replace the current discs with ones that are correctly labeled? The customer service department at Lionsgate (unlike Criterions) is pretty cruddy.

Way to throw away Bunuel titles.

Something is still very fishy about this. From what I understand the films are still in litigation, and legally, Televisa is not allowed to license films they may not own.

Seems obvious that these are for the Spanish market in North America.

Warner has released 11 movies by Pedro Infante, Art is 100% Latin but these have English subs but also Portuguese which happens seldom.

Lionsgate has done incalculable disservice to the North American market by issuing these Bunuel films without English subtitles. I somehow missed this exchange on the forum and ordered the latest DVD of Nazarin. I could not believe that neither film on that DVD had English subs. Does anyone have Liongates contact information to send them protest e-mails?

Why would Lionsgate not seize the opportunity to distribute this in an English-friendly package. It would be interesting to find out how their previous Luis Bunuel Collection set sold in North America.

The only plausible consolation one can garner from this news is the probable licensing agreement that Lionsgate has with Criterion. I would wager that Lionsgate has North American rights to distribute these titles in Spanish only. Best Buy, which typically stocks hundreds of titles aimed specifically for the Spanish-speaking market, is not stocking this package at their stores (though they are available to purchase from their website).

Regardless, Criterion is more than likely prepping these titles for inclusion into its Eclipse series of films, though Nazarin definitely deserves to be a stand-alone Criterion title!

I really hope this is what's behind the Lionsgate decision not to include English subtitles for this recent release. By the way, for those of you that kept their copies, how do the transfers look?

Any particular recommendations? (I note that School for Tramps apparently stars the wonderful Miroslava Stern).

It arrived today to my hands. Nazarin has got a good image quality. The Spanish DVD release was very poor. Sadly, La ilusión... looks an old VHS. Each film is on one side of the dvd. I hate that, but it's cheap and Nazarin is a masterpiece. Not seen ever Ilusión viaja en tranvía.

Illusion is a wonderful little film -- one of Bunuel's most good-natured (but still has some very funny moments). Too bad that the new transfer is not only unsubtitled but of poor quality.
