I just went over to the Gutenberg Project and read the Balzac story (in English). Wow, Rivette has been incredibly faithful to his source. I had thought that, at the very least, Rivette had imposed a more cinematic structure on the material. Not so. Decades before cinema was even imagined, Balzac had already mastered the flashback.

Balzac should have kept the original Ne touche pas à la hache title which I find strikingly modern and fresh. The Duchesse de Langeais never made me want to read the book. Makes you think of naphtaline.

I was riveted until about two thirds of the way through. Rivette did something that broke his hold on my imagination, but for the life of me I can't remember what it was. It will take another viewing, obviously.
