I can't remember if I've ever posted a link to the towers I use, but here it is. It really depends on your home, but for me, I definitely have the corner space for these towers and not nearly enough usable wall space for the equivalent shelves. FWIW, if you're using these towers only for DVD's and Blu-rays, the metal lazy Susan recommended in so many of those Amazon customer reviews is not worth the trouble - a tower full of DVD's and/or Blu-rays will be substantially lighter than one full of CD's, and on top of that, if you tried to install a metal lazy Susan, you risk cracking or splitting the base.

Interesting! Can you post or pm me a link to the kind you use?

My partner tells me what I have are comic short boxes. They measure 15” x 11.5” x 8” and hold 46 DVDs per box (2 stacked layers of 23). Mine are cardboard and I can't find any branding on them. I just bought them at the local comic book store. There are also comic long boxes, which hold more and have more room on the sides, but the short boxes fit DVDs just right so I prefer them.

Thanks. I think I found some online and they are probably a standard size. I checked the measurements and they should definitely fit two stacks of DVDs.

Not sure if this is the right thread, but does anyone have a good source for replacement cases, both blue and clear? I got an MoC with a cracked case and it's simply too much trouble to return. I'd rather hold on to it and get a replacement case.

I've had pretty good luck getting replacement cases on Ebay including some 2-disc Scanavos for repackaging Criterions. Vinegar Syndrome and Radiance also sell some styles of cases directly through their websites. I've never tried getting an exact replacement for an MoC-style case, though--not sure about those.

I believe Indicator also sells the clear cases

Their limited edition cases have been sold out for several months, but here are some standard cases

To continue the Warners discussion more generally, I have about two hundred titles on DVD that have yet to
make it to blu-ray, not to mention a few VHS tapes that have yet to be released in any digital format.

Chronological order by director is how I organize my films too. Originally it was just alphabetical but then Glenn Kenny posted somewhere how his esteem for David Fincher had grown enough that he now earned a spot in the "auteur" shelves of his library - it never occurred to me to arrange my library that way and eventually I gave it a try. Works out great, but I would recommend a section at the end for those who haven't "earned" a section where it's just alphabetical by title.

The concern you should be having is why is the ‘28 L’Argent before Capra if it’s sorted by director considering it wouldn’t work if was sorted by either first or last name.

FWIW, I go by year, but bunch director or major comedy acts together. So, for instance, 1917 begins with THE HAROLD LLOYD COLLECTION, runs through 1936 (all the features in the set plus Criterion reissues get a separate listing), then John Ford starts with 1917 again (STRAIGHT SHOOTING) and runs all the way to 1962's THE MAN WHO SHOT LIBERTY VALANCE. Then titles revert to 1918 (DUBARRY by Lubitsch, ending with 1946's CLUNY BROWN), then 1919 with J'ACCUSE by Gance and so on. The films are all on a spreadsheet with columns Year, Title, Director, Format, Region, Releasing Company and a note if the film is in a set (e.g.FORD AT FOX, DIETRICH AND VON STERNBERG IN HOLLYWOOD or if it's bundled with another film like Cohen's THE THREE MUSKETEERS/THE IRON MASK). Of course, nobody gives a shit except for me and it's quite a bit to maintain, but I'm retired and have a lot of time on my hands...

L'Herbier's earliest film I have on disc is Prométhée... banquier (1921), Capra's is The Ballad of Fisher’s Boarding House (1922)

What do you do then if there’s an earlier short on a disc from another director, do you include it with the director of the featured film works or with the director of the earlier short?

I don’t feel so bad about my ordering system, which is “eh, whatever order I bought ‘em in”.

I’m moving in with my girlfriend, and I’ve been trying to explain to her why I would never organize by genre (like she does) or director — both are way too nebulous for me to feel comfortable. As it is, I’ve already got to decide where to put imports with different names in different countries!

Is there anyone who organizes by genre and then director?

Director order is based on earliest film I'm aware of that I have on any disc. For instance, the earliest King Vidor film (Bud's Recruit, 1918) is in one of the Treasures from American Archives sets. This is easy to keep track of in a spreadsheet
