That's Rentaro Mikuni. He's neither dead nor Kon Ichikawa.

Don't take this post as an attack, but... hate to break it to you but Kon Ichikawa has passed away. About a year ago now. It was even listed on the old Criterion website.

And isn't that film still from Burmese Harp? A movie he directed? Why not use it?

I'm afraid you've missed the point. The photo used in the Academy's montage is not of Ichikawa, it is of Mikuni. Here is a photo of Ichikawa at a similarly advanced age:



And contrary to your impression, his passing was noted, discussed, and mourned in this forum.

By the way, since Man On Wire James Marsh has directed 1980, the second of three films adapted by Tony Grisoni (screenwriter of Fear and Loathing In Las Vegas and Tideland) from the Red Riding series by James Peace. 1974 is directed by Julian Jarrold and 1983 by Anand Tucker (eclectic choices!)

According to the article in this month's Sight and Sound all four books were going to be adapted initially but 1977 was dropped and folded into the other films. Also the article mentioned that while the series is showing on Channel 4 from next week here in the UK, the three films may be released theatrically in other territories.

Wow, Mike Leigh in the Guardian proves himself to be quite the sad and bitter man. Why do these guys care so much about an Oscar? Was this why he made a film in which sheer happiness is a bulwark against racism, homelessness and all other ills?

A luvvy with an axe to grind, I would say.

Kermode is an over-exposed buffoon, which makes him so much worse than many of his equally challenged colleagues.
