I think the general feeling around here is that the two will probably be reissued together as they were originally (and as Shock Corridor and Naked Kiss have been), as suggested in the Forthcoming Criterion List and earlier in this thread. I'm to blame for them being discussed separately here by distinguishing between B&W and color titles.Jun-Dai wrote:Oh, and Branded to Kill makes a lot less sense than Tokyo Drifter, though it is more beautifully shot.

I didn't mean that it makes less sense as a reissue (if that's what you thought I meant). I just meant that the film itself makes a lot less sense overall.Noiradelic wrote:I think the general feeling around here is that the two will probably be reissued together as they were originally (and as Shock Corridor and Naked Kiss have been), as suggested in the Forthcoming Criterion List and earlier in this thread. Re: 'Forthcoming' Lists Discussion and Random Speculation Vo
You're crazy! These are two of the best films in the collection! Two of the best examples of pure cinema - a steady liquid cocktail of light, color, sound and movement injected straight into the optic nerve, until your brain is left looking like Max Ernst's "The Kiss". Or to put it less pretentiously: these movies fucking pwn!
Hell, it took these two to make me take notice of the Criterion brand: yes, we know 8 1/2 and Rules of the Games are great films, but they're no brainers. That they had the ability and insight to excavate unknown entities like this is what made me first follow everything they release. If not for these two films, it is concievable that instead of posting here I would probably be on MUBI right now, arguing why Freejack, and not Under Siege, is the 37th best film of 1992.

I agree. Tokyo Drifter and Branded to Kill are two of the best films that I likely wouldn't have seen by now if CC hadn't put them out.

I'd also like to see Tokyo Drifter on Blu (never got into Branded To Kill) sooner rather than later.

Come on, Blu-ray has better technical quality, therefore anything (if done right) should be released in that format.

Noticed that Godard's Sauve qui peut (la vie) is playing in a new print. How likely that we could get that sometime soon?

SAUVE QUI PEUT (LA VIE) will be a Zeitgeist DVD release, as I was told last year.

What, no hope for CARRIE? That's an MGM property and Criterion are sitting on special features left over from their laserdisc release. MGM isn't doing anything special with it, so why not?justeleblanc wrote: I doubt we'll get another De Palma release

MGM already released it on Blu, so I doubt its a possibility.CSM126 wrote:What, no hope for CARRIE? And Universal released Fear and Loathing on blu. Criterion is not above double dipping a blu when they know they can do better, it would seem.justeleblanc wrote:MGM already released it on Blu, so I doubt its a possibility.CSM126 wrote:What, no hope for CARRIE? And it's not like MGM is in a position to turn down money at this point.

Far more likely is Dressed to Kill. It's MGM and OOP.

I always figured the most likely was "Phantom of the Paradise", which has quite a following and a beautiful Blu-Ray available only in France.

Just to clarify, that means (assuming you're right, which I've no reason to doubt) that a Criterion release is out of the question, right?justeleblanc wrote:SAUVE QUI PEUT (LA VIE) will be a Zeitgeist DVD release, as I was told last year.
I saw Sauve qui peut last year for the first time (not the new print, a crappy online version that looked like it came from VHS originally) and was completely blown away. Probably in my top three Godards.
I'm not really familiar with Zeitgeist. Do they tend to do good work? Any chance of a blu ray?

Yes, that means there is no chance of a criterion. They usually do good work being the main handlers or Greenaway and Maddin in America. To the best of my knowledge they haven't started on Blu-ray yet. There's more information on the forum here.

Wasn't there actually a Hi, Mom hint? Or did that turn out to be Blow Out?

Re: 'Forthcoming' Lists Discussion and Random Speculation Vo
Has anyone else noticed that Criterion has had a few questions about Godard on their Facebook page within the last month (questions like "Which Godard film would you like to see Criterion release?" and "Which non-Karina film is your favorite?"). I haven't read through all of the previous pages, so I don't know if this has been discussed or is common knowledge. I wonder if these could mean something....or maybe I'm just hoping that they do.

They mentioned WEEKEND specifically and they also replied to a question about THE NEW LAND/THE EMIGRANTS saying "Keep your fingers crossed."

They said on Facebook about a year ago that a DePalma title was a possibility. It was Blow-Out that they were referring to. I don't think that there's any reason to believe they have anything else yet.Highway 61 wrote:Wasn't there actually a Hi, Mom hint? Or did that turn out to be Blow Out?
