Sexy Beast will be in both 2.35:1 & 1.78:1.

Theatrical exhibition was 2.35:1, but a lot of people think AR should be 16x9 because it was released a few times in that ratio previously:

Personally, I think 16x9 looks too loose. Compare to similar caps for American Psycho or Halloween H20, both of which are definitely 2.35:1, but have also had 1.78:1 versions released:

Seems sort of pointless, but they don't mention it is 2 discs, so it won't affect the price.

I think it's great-- are we really griping about everything concerning this label now? Two aspect ratios, the consumer gets to choose, and everyone wins. Say what you will about TT, but Sony would never have bothered to do this if they'd released it themselves

For the record, I'm easily one of the bigger TT supporters over here.

I'm certainly not arguing against it's inclusion, I just never felt the arguments for it were anything near credible. But you're right, if more studios/companies were willing to do this then we wouldn't have half the AR bitching we do today.

Olive did it once that I know of, for Frank and Panama's the Trap (Academy and widescreen on same disc), not sure if they've done it before or since that though

I don't think so. It's too bad because Johnny Guitar, Hell's Half Acre and The Atomic Kid could have used alternate presentations of, you know, their intended AR.

I don't understand why there should be any confusion over the correct aspect ratio of such a recent film. Gary's comments don't clarify things at all, as he mentions "IMDb, Amazon and a number of other sources claim it was originally (or composed for) 1.85:1." Why even bother citing sources that are so arbitrary? IMDb listed 1.85:1 at one time but now says 2.35:1.

I believe it's something to do with Film4 wanting it more for TV exhibition than theatrical, and so they asked for an open matte print. Or something. That's how they released it on Blu-ray. It played 2.35:1 in cinemas and to me looks best that way. But you're right in saying that it's daft there's even a debate over a film 13 years old; why don't they just ask the Director/DP?

FYI, Sexy Beast is a Fox title.

My bad, but my argument is true for any studio of course

Asking the DP might land you in a Bird with the Crystal Plumage situation. I have seen the film several times, including once in the theater, and I must say that 2.35:1 looks best. I am glad that aspect ratio is preserved!

Regarding Sexy Beast, how many Fox titles have they done?

How often does everyone blind buy Twilight Time releases? I do it frequently, if almost always, with Criterion releases, mainly because I get them for 50% off at the B&N sale.

With TT though, I'm rather reluctant, mainly because I don't feel like spending $30 on a film that I not only may not like, but also is probably rather bare bones in terms of special features.

I went out of my way to rent the DVDs of a few upcoming TT releases, like The Driver and Sexy Beast. Watched both tonight for the first time and rather enjoyed Sexy Beast, so I might pick that one up. The Driver was alright, I'll probably pass on it for now. But, doing this is nearly impossible for films like The Disappearance and Rapture, both of which I don't believe have had DVD releases before (although Rapture is actually on YouTube).

Any easy recommendations from frequent TT buyers? I'm trying to get more into this label now, because even as I'm not a huge fan of their business model, I don't want to miss out on any OOP films that I could potentially end up really liking.

I'd recommend Rapture highly as I believe the only person on the board to not like it so far has been Zedz. I haven't seen the other title you mentioned, but it is directed by Stuart Cooper which could only mean positive things.

The Disappearance appears to be their first release that is not licensed from either Fox or Sony, but from "a company in the UK." They've mentioned on Facebook that it will be coded to region A for that reason.

Hopefully that means a UK release will come very soon.

Out of interest: for the same reasons, or something else in particular? I just watched this off YouTube - thanks for the tip, criterion10! - and was moved to put the Blu on my shopping list. While I could certainly see a lot of things that might bother some people (basically most of the stuff zedz enumerated here), I'd be very interested to hear why someone would outright hate it!

TT is totally independent. They release films under license from Fox, Sony and soon MGM
