Besides, I don't think they could improve any better than the DVD that is already out on 12 Monkeys.

La Jetee would be nice. I was at first disappointed because I thought the "clue" was just that Eclipse was finally starting up (12 apes, 12 releases a year, and doesn't the sun come out after an eclipse?)

La Jetee has appeared with Janus films logo on TCM for anyone who is still sceptical. And the recent blog from Peter Becker meeting at Paris mentioning Chris Marker.

A quote from Ms. Allison Anders and her Top Ten:

'I'm not in love with John Ford's movies. They are staples, and it's like saying you don't like bread—Ford's films are in all filmmakers' foundations, somewhere, it's inescapable. But when it comes to being in love with movies, I'm more of an Anthony Mann girl.'

Imagine - an 'Anthony Mann girl'!

Just for that alone we should all be running to buy Border Radio today.

Oh, yeah, like any Anthony Mann fan would enjoy Border Radio.

Or any cinema fan, for that matter. It's a pretty piss-poor movie.

(Don't want to bash her. Her other stuff is more interesting. This is a stinker.

Thanks, Criterion!)

Um, that would be 2001!

The monkeys at the beginning and the sunrise.

Twelve Monkeys has the writing credits of Chris Marker.

But that one cannot be; it was released by Universal on DVD in 2005.

So, the entire thing is meant to be a strong hint about Chris Marker, I guess (at least for Sans Soleil)..

In all likelihood, this points to a single package of SANS SOLEIL and LA JETEE, but I am hoping for a standalone release of LA JETEE, on the order of the budget-priced standalone release of NIGHT AND FOG. I was hoping that release, which is a great favorite of mine, might pave the way for other low-dough standalone short film releases, of titles such as ZERO FOR CONDUCT, THE RED BALLOON and (yes) LA JETEE, among others. But so far, no such luck.

I bothered Mulvaney about The Red Balloon back in the day after Night and Fog (I mean, they released it on laser, didn't they?) and got the standard "don't have the rights, can't discuss releases" response. I haven't written them in years. Maybe I should start smothering the new guy with e-mails for that one.

I'm taking the monkeys as more of a La Jetee reference. I can't see a Criterion release of 12 Monkeys being any stronger than the Universal DVDs. The only reason I'd see them releasing it is if they stuck La Jetee on as a supplement, but that would make its own decent release.

I suspect that it will be a pairing of La Jetee and Sans Soleil, probably much like the Arte Video R2 single disk set. That said, it would be really great if Criterion could make it a two-disk set including a few of Marker's other films.

Si j'avais quatre dromadaires [If I Had Four Camels] would make a wonderful extra alongside La Jetee. Si j'avais... is in many ways La Jetee's documentary cousin, as it employs the same still-photograph approach and even features a similar 'startling' moment.

Others such as Lettre de Siberie or Le Mystere Koumiko would make great companions to Sans Soleil.

But, that said, I'm thrilled to see Marker's addition to the collection. Hopefully more to come, especially since so little of his amazing work is available in any region or format.

And they're going to be Eclipse releases?

Sans soleil and La jetee are far too important to be Eclipse titles.

I would also love to see Lettre de Sibérie included, but I doubt it will happen.

but it would be pretty cool if Eclipse released a bunch of Marker's lesser known works... it'd definitely suit the label

I know there's really no connection aside from the fact it shared a VHS release with La Jetee, but if the animated short Bambi Meets Godzilla could sneak its way on here, it would easily launch this into my Mount Olympus of DVD releases.

I'm hoping they release both La Jetee and Sans Soleil in a mini-box set similar to I am Curious with all the bells and whistles included on each respective disc.

Note how Criterion's elaboration on the new releases in their newsletter has become anecdotal, as opposed to mini-review or florid commentary. Nice.
CC Newsletter wrote:Border Radio
During the four-year production of their labor of love Border Radio, filmmakers Allison Anders and Kurt Voss were so broke that they often had to sell records for a little extra cash. One day, as they were bringing a pile to the Rhino Record Store in Santa Monica, California, they found themselves face-to-face with Chris D., the lead singer of the Flesh Eaters and the star of their film, who was working behind the counter. In an effort to convince Chris that things weren't quite so financially difficult and to keep him optimistic that the film would get finished, Kurt and Allison stuffed the records under their arms, as if they had just purchased them, and proceeded to pretend to browse through the store.
