Nah, they had forgotten to allow a spine number for Jutzi's 1930 version of the film, and therefore had to make room for it by moving the Saura picture.

So, Fassbinder's Berlin, Alexanderplatz (Fassbinder, 1980) is of course #400, like the Dcuk said, and #401 is Berlin, Alexanderplatz (Phil Jutzi, 1930).

You know, I had actually thought about making the joke about the 1930 version, but I thought I remembered hearing something about it being ruled out somehow. The making of was confirmed somehere or another, but since its only 45 minutes long I doubt it'd get a spine number.

Are you sure Berlin is coming out this soon? Isn't it touring the country a bit before the DVD release?

Though, what about another premiere work from a New Waver, like Paris Belongs to Us or Le Beau Serge. Then an Eclipse set to go with it.

I think Drunken Angel has got to be in one of those two spots.

Vivre se vie is a possibility. We are still yet to recieve one Bergman, Renoir, Kurosawa, Ozu this year. Those probably being The Magician or Monika, The Crime of Monseiur Lange, and Drunken Angel, and An Autumn Afternoon or I Was Born, But....

I think Criterion will hit us up with a double dip/renumbering of "The 400 Blows: The Fun & Flirty Edition."

wouldn't work with the theory that 400 and 401 are two separate films from one director, which I'm still operating under.

and presuming that it's Godard, with Breathless goes I would guess 2 or 3 Things seems the best bet since the screenings of the new print were late last year, but I'll welcome a third Vivre se vie DVD into my collection any day.

Too soon for 2 or 3 things, its still playing in theaters across the country.

If it's Breathless, I really don't think Pierrot is a bad guess at all. They are bookends to his first ten Nouvelle Vague period, before he started changing his swing with Masc Fem. Plus, BAM are showing them together.

But really, who's to say 400 and 401 aren't two Pabst films. We're so dead set on Breathless we forgot that earlier this year Criterion announced Mack the Knife.

Isn't the Janus print of Pierrot le fou just going out to theatres tho? I would love to see a left-field Godard title be that 401, a title we didn't even realize was in play.

Pierrot's playing Brooklyn mid-June....I don't know of any other scheduled showings.

Nah, 400 will be Berlin Alexanderplatz and 401 will be Lili Marleen.

For the knowledgeable, is the possibility there that criterion will pick up Pasolini's The Gospel According to St. Matthew? The transfer on the carlotta edition looks pristine, but no english subs.

Hilarity aside, the fact that they kept 400 open and then re-opened #401 definitely suggests that it'll be two films by the same director, and given how central Godard has been to the criterion collection--they've released the R1 of a lot of Godard's films over the years, no?--I'd agree that it's probably Breathless andPierrot le Fou.

I imagine that the films would be available separately, and I certainly hope so. I've seen Breathless a couple of times, but I've spent enough on criterions this year already, and am in no hurry to buy this film until I have a bit more disposable income. Along these lines, what I hope DOESN'T happen is a box of the two films with the extras on a separate disc, a la the Malle boxset (did the disc of Malle extras have its own spine #? If so, I guess I don't have to worry...)

No, the Malle supplements did not get their own spine number. They're not available separately either.

No, the Malle supplements did not get their own spine number. They're not available separately either.

I wouldn't worry either way. The only times Criterion has offered a bonus disc for a set of more than one film has been when they've done a box of three or four films, never only two (Malle, Fassbinder, Truffaut).

I'm not sold on the idea that 401 was changed to have two standalone titles by the same director. They've ignored this "convenience" in the past, most recently with the Dassin's (380 & 383). It would make the most sense for it to be a box set for a single film, with a supplemental film getting its own spine like My Metier, A Constant Forge or Ingmar Bergman Makes a Movie. I would also caution against the assumption that 400 is Breathless, given that there has never been only a one month gap between a newsletter confirmation and an announcement.

Agreed, though if I remember correctly both Kicking and Screaming and Dazed and Confused might have been pretty darn close to their newsletter teasers.

It's usually 1-3 months after announcement on newsletter.

I don't know if this is the best place to ask but does anyone know whether Gate of Hell (Teinosuke Kinugasa, 1953) has been mentioned as a future release or if anyone has any information, the VHS details say that it is a Homevision release from a Janus films print. Surely Criterion can't pass up this Cannes and Oscar winner?
