Of course. But beating out Tom Hooper and Aaron Sorkin is a kind of justice.

If it was Revenant or Big Short it would've been disappointing to me so I'm totally happy with Spotlight winning.

I agree. Nothing super surprising, but that's due to the ambiguous and even handed nature of the awards season.

Spotlight is a worthy enough winner. Of the nominees, I thought it was the 2nd best film overall after Fury Road. It's the type of film that will benefit from people seeking it out decades from now when they watch all the BP winners.

As a Mad Max fan, I can't complain. It had twice the wins as the next closest film, and as a film that is so stylized it won't appeal to everyone. I wish Miller had won, but Inarritu joining rarified double-win directors air is impressive.

I look forward to The Birth of a Nation sweeping next year.

Yeah, I've pretty happy for A24. The Ex Machina upset has to be one of the more exciting things. They're going to get real big soon. For the actual show I really love that adorable kid taking his stage time to congratulate Chris Rock for Madagascar. That was just sweet (also apparently children can pronounce words better then Travolta now).

Our local news (in Philadelphia) never fails to introduce their Oscar story as "Hollywood's biggest night"

I read somewhere that the reason it hasn't been matching up lately is the switch to preferential balloting for BP means those lower tier indicators are less representative of the overall most liked (but not necessarily most passionately so)

Iñárritu's reaction to the man-in-a-bear-suit bit (as cringe-y as that was) was a highlight for me.

Don Hertzfeldt not winning was my biggest personal disappointment, albeit an entirely expected one.

I don't mind the Grammys putting CBS TV folks on their telecast but ABC putting Kerry Washington (Django Unchained) and Priyanka Chopra (numerous Bollywood movies) on was a bit much.

Why?

Just smacks of wanting to promote ABC TV shows over having presenters who were actually in films last year.

Washington also presented last year. She gets a lot of coverage at a movie awards ceremony for someone whose last movie was a Tyler Perry production 3 years ago.

In a year where persons of color didn't make the 'cut' for a variety of systemic reasons- only one nominee in the top 6 major categories was a person of color - Alejandro González Iñárritu winning back-to-back Best Director Oscars, the first since 1950, and only the third director to do so w Ford and Mankiewicz, well... that sort of seems like consolation to me. Says the White Midwest English/Norwegian American privileged dude.

Fair enough.

I wonder, with streaming becoming an equal and if not stronger alternative to traditional television, if and/or when the Academy would ever consider going that route? I would guess not anytime soon because they probably draw a mostly older audience that may or may not get the concept of streaming yet.

Really a mixed bag of winners, compounded by the fact that while I love that Mad Max essentially sweeped the technical categories, it screwed up my predictions.

Stallone does have a non-acting Oscar at least. Hardy will have many more nominations, as will Ruffalo in all likelihood.
