clearly covers like Narnia happen when the designers are stuck using MS Paint as their only option for image editing

I just hope this isn't final.
Pretty sure it isn't -- DVD Empire has much more final-looking art.

Animego have done worse, but still. I'm definitely going to buy this one, I'll just brown bag it.

It wouldn't have been so bad if it was just the B&W photo collage that's in the background. They had to ruin it by slapping on the big duotoned Mifunehead.

Less the blue Mifune head and the "THE DRAMATIC TRUE STORY OF THE END OF WWII" that is, it would have been pretty decent. I wonder how many people have stayed away from this other Okamoto gem, purely because of the tasteless cover (awful for so many reasons)?

I saw a fine looking Samurai Assassin cover just the other day.
I'll add a link if I find it.

Surprised no one posted this one (great film, bad DVD cover):

Image

Not as bad as the original cover design (featuring some kind of "Menace to Society" script), but still bad:

Like the aforementioned Inside Man, A History of Violence had great poster art. The same goes for the new Syriana DVD cover. Just transfer the poster art. Sheesh.

A History of Violence had the best promo for the dvd release on IMDb. It was the final cover image of Viggo's upward tilted gun firing yellow pixel line bullets to the top of the advert and with each bullet the text changed.

These crappy collage-esque designs are all over the place.

Have you noticed how they've used the original cover, cut out Viggo Mortensen and moved Maria Bello over so now she's clutching at her son's arm - it's as if in the second, final, DVD cover Viggo has run forward to threaten the photographer with his gun.

"Don't you dare take any crappy photos of my family!"

And a dog too! Is he doing something to the mutt to make it smile like that?

Well, I'm not sayin' that anyone will agree with me, but I absolutely can't stand the cover for eagerly-awaited (at least by me) Sergeant York. And, no, I won't post a copy of it.

Is it just me, or does Janet Suzman bear the slightest resemblance to Kenneth Williams?

That N&A seems entirely average. Gets the stately theme across and has a unified color scheme.

OTOH, this is just excessively cheesy. Like their cover art budget was instead spent on cheese sandwiches:

What's worse is that apparently there is an entire Garbo series with these slapdash covers. The Anna Christie Dvd cover looks marginally better.

Yea, but like the Wayne/Ford Warner's, these are simply using vintage bijou/lobby card art as covers which I think is great. It's real vintage-era naivete, not bad photoshopping or dopey young BA's not bothering to watch the films they're creating box art for.

Exactly, vintage-era naivete with more than a touch of nostalgia. I just picked up the Bogart Bacall Collection and love all the covers for precisely the same reason.

I like the concept of using vintage art, and think some of the vintage materials work well as Dvd covers, while others don't. I really like the Warner Film Noir series (such as Gun Crazy).

But for me this Queen Christina cover is just so bland and offers up no image or idea of the film itself ... except that Garbo is in it. Of course, such lobby art was intended to fulfill a different role, and usually were presented along with other posters. The QC cover promotes Garbo, but does nothing to differentiate the film.

I half-like this Anna Christie cover (I'm not fond of the bulky yellow billboard with the other actors' names), but it's certainly far better designed than the Queen Christina cover:

That's what most film boxes/ads do-- portrait the stars. Look at Pandoras Box: Louise Brooks.

Those that try to describe the plot or content of the film wind up too busy & crammed with floating heads & dopey tag lines.

The foreground is OK, but they ruined it with the pics of Nick and Alex - I'll bet they fitted Janet Suzman with a face from another photo.
