Who do I support for Horse Money, these guys or Second Run???

Second Run in order to encourage them to release more blu-rays, not to mention they promise exclusive extras!

In this case, I think I'm going to get both.

They aren't. Big World Pictures is, and Cinema Guild distributes for them. According to a Slant Magazine review, the disc is not so great. Still getting it, plus East of Bucharest, Counting, and The Princess of France.

I just noticed the specs for the Horse Money BD say it will be 720p. Is this right? Is that how the film was shot?

His last feature was shot in SD PAL, so that's plausible. Or it could just be a typo.

In his interview with Cinema Scope, Costa said he shot on a Panny AG-DVX100, but I thought that was SD. He also said it recorded onto cards, which the DVX100 didn't, so perhaps he meant the AG-DVX100 which was basically the HD upgrade and records onto P2s. It shoots 720p or 1080i, but the 720p mode is more versatile as the speed can be variably cranked. Which might explain the blu.

I saw Horse Money on a DCP a few weeks ago and some scenes stood out to me because they looked lower res compared to the rest of the movie. I'm thinking specifically of the scenes in the abandoned factory where I noticed lots of jaggies and "blockiness" for instance in the leaves on the ground etc. Loved the movie for the largest part (lost me a bit with the elevator scene), and it looked fantastic (what I described here didn't really bother me I must say).

I remember using the DVX100 with my classmates in school - that was the camera they had to use in a documentary class for journalism school. It was indeed SD only, and tape only (though you could rig it to record straight to a laptop).

There's a typo in there, I think you mean the AG-HVX200, what was then the concurrent higher grade model which recorded to P2 cards (I remember the broadcasters in the same school using this - first time I ever saw a P2 card). Going by his description in the cinema-scope interview, I would've guessed he meant the DVX100's real HD successor, the AG-HMC150 (which my classmates were using not long after), but at the NYFF premiere, he mentioned DVX100 again and seemed to imply it was the same camera he's been using since Colossal Youth and I think In Vanda's Room, so that could rule out the HVX200 and definitely the HMC150. Who knows? Maybe he found a way to rig the DVX100 to record to a card.

I wish you guys were around NYC last year when they premiered this at the NYFF, I had a free, spare ticket (great seat too).

I remember noticing this too. Costa made a passing mention that outdoor wide shots could be tough, and it showed - basically any wide shot that was very well-lit (sunlight) and filled with complex detail would reveal all the limitations of the camera, in terms of resolving detail and capturing the entire spectrum of light (and darkness). When the range is narrowed a bit like in indoor scenes where there is just enough light, works great - Costa really found the sweet spot on that camera and milked it for all its worth.

Ha, yeah the HVX200. I've seen DVX100s hooked up to laptops to record, but not using cards. The external P2 units I've seen were such a price that jury-rigging one up doesn't seem worth it.

Horse Money was supposed to be out 1st quarter of 2016, but there still isn't even an announced release date. Any updates?

At this point I kinda wish I hadn't bought the Cinema Guild version since it looks like Second Run's will be out first (plus I like the idea of having the first SR blu-ray release).

I mean I'm not in a huge hurry but no further details or a firm release date is kind of aggravating.

It's no home video, but I do want to mention that those interested in streaming the film can do so on Netflix.

Our Blu-ray is still coming, a firm date will be available soon. Pedro Costa is very involved with the disc and has created a new transfer of his short film OUR MAN which has delayed us a few weeks. We will have more news very soon.

CG has stated on Facebook that the DVD and Blu are set for release on May 31.

I don't believe Cinema Guild have announced any kind of home video release yet. I took Aunt Peg's post as mere wishful thinking.

We're a long way off from any home video news. It is not getting a theatrical release until 2017.

Yes, that comment of mine is wishful thinking.

We don't even know when Counting is going to be released, even though it was up for pre-order back in November. Cinema Guild has been eerily quiet this year.
