Wow, they must've researched with a closing Borders store rather than just going to the Criterion website.

I know there's no debating subjective opinion, but holy Christ are they just wrong with those picks

I legitimately disagree with every single one of those.

They have nearly six hundred to choose from, and they pick both Chaplin covers. Incredible.

I think they just clicked on the "New" and "Coming Soon" links from criterion.com to come up with these.

It's obviously a joke they're playing on this forum to provoke us to do our own list, again.

I'd be willing to tally the votes if you guys want to get something like that together. Everyone could vote for their top 5 and I'll just ignore the inevitable 6-10s and/or "Cover Art that Makes Me Think About Potatoes the Most" extraneous stuff.

We already counted votes on that last year for the Criterion anniv or something

(And Time magazine really didn't have anything better for that intern to do? Weren't there some rubbish bins that needed emptying, some expenses forms that needed photocopying or something?)

Time magazine's "top 10 coolest Criterion covers"????? I thought I've seen it all. Now I really think the world Is ending soon.

Ordinarily I'd agree, but that list is terrible. Objectively.

Does TIME really matter anymore though? It used to be a trendy magazine but, ever since the internet/online thingie took over (and that joke of a 'YOU' mirror cover for 'Person of the Year' a few years back), they're hopelessly behind the ball (with exceptions like James Poniewozik's excellent 'Tuned In' blog). Other than "House" (which isn't Top 10 material but it's a pretty cool cover) these alleged "top 10 Criterion covers" are either too plain ("Days of Heaven"), too normal ("Royal Tenenbaums," "Make Way for Tomorrow") or they just plain stink/suck/blow/etc. (the Chaplins).

Well, it's not like there's any important news going on in the world for TIME to report or comment on.

Time doesn't matter any more because even the middlebrow now likes to get its news a bit quicker than a week and a half after it happened.

Come on guys, it's not like we're talking about Time Advanced or anything.

^ I guess Time only discovered Criterion last year, looking at the picks (all have been from the blu-ray era, besides The Royal Tenenbaums, which anybody who's fav movie isn't The Dark Knight would know of that Criterion.).

2 of those covers being from this past announcement, makes this even more a joke (along with BOTH Chaplins being there).


With that being said, Masculine Feminine is still my fav cover.

I thought so too but I'm afraid that's not the case. It's really a shame. Looking at the case in my hand, the design - the whole feeling and look of it - is certainly uninspiring and blah. An insult to one of the world's finest films.

Last week, I kicked off a Visconti marathon in my home to celebrate Tuesdays release of Senso. From Ossessione to L'innocente. I have decided that the Holy Trinity of Visconti's cinema is: Senso, Rocco and His Brothers and The Leopard.

These both dated back to immediately before the wacky C/clear keepcase era. Since they didn't do cover redesigns, I don't imagine they were inclined to spend the time doing interior art and all the rest.

Great Dictator cover has been flipped plus is now red instead of orange.
