For anyone in NYC (or with friends there), Mondo Kim's has rental copies of most or all of the Nakagawa ghost movies ... bootleg DVD-rs of the Greek discs, so they should be copyable.

The retrospective will include several Janus titles, including new 35mm prints of Empire of Passion, In the Realm of the Senses, Japanese Summer: Double Suicide, Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence, Pleasures of the Flesh, and Violence at Noon. The tour will subsequently head to the Cinematheque Ontario, with other North American venues to follow.

So I suppose the three 1960 Oshima's are still at New Yorker, whom love to sit on their films.

Any likelihood we'll see the Apu trilogy anytime soon?

It's worth noting that all three of those films (CRUEL STORY OF YOUTH, NIGHT AND FOG IN JAPAN and THE SUN'S BURIAL) are in the retrospective.

Retrospectives usually have various rights holders though. Of course, just because those films are not Janus, doesn't mean they can't be licenced.

Some light at the end of the tunnel? Those three 60s titles sound like an Eclipse box waiting to happen, and to the best of my knowledge Japanese Summer isn't available anywhere with subs. If full-fledged Criterions of the later, lesser titles are the gateway drug for those films that's fine by me.

Re. Apu. I heard that Sony Classics' Ray rights had lapsed, but I don't have any hard evidence for that. If so, it can only be good news, since they've been pretty feeble custodians of those films.

Has anyone tried asking Criterion about releasing more of Yang's films? I mean the retrospectives must mean there's some possibility, right!? They haven't responded to any of my emails.

Here you go, from many pages back, but only about a month ago (aren't we garrulous?). It's vague as vague can be, but it's a morsel.

Disappointing, but at least there's some hope for more Yang somewhere down the road.

It's better than having no possibility. If they manage to release them, I might forgive Criterion for everything. Well, a release of Out 1 wouldn't hurt... I really can't understand why they haven't released City of Sadness (or any other Hou, for that matter) already, let alone not have it planned.

What are the chances of any Jean Epstein releases?

A forum member at criterionforum.com posted an interesting bit of potential gossip that he found on the rare and oop dvd forum. A poster at the rare and oop dvd forum who goes by the screen name diceman89 had sent an email to Mulvaney inquiring about the films Beloved and The Idiots. He got a no on Beloved and a "check back in a few months" on Lars Von Trier's The Idiots.

It would be nice to see this Von Trier film in the collection as I think it's a far better representation of him as an artist than the Europa trilogy.

I sent an email to Mulvaney to hopefully confirm that Von Trier's The Idiots is coming next year! Hopefully he replies in the next few days with a more definitive answer.

God I hope it comes out on Blu.

I, personally, would just be thrilled if Face to Face and The Magician came out next year.

yeah I guess you're right. Face to Face and The Magician will be good, but let's not forget Summer with Monika will probably have a bigger chance of comiing out because, it is being shown in some theaters. It would be great if all the earlier films came out, Dreams, Summer Interlude and such. But Face to Face, The Magician and Summer with Monika are key..

I can see a simultaneous release of Summer Interlude and Monika ala the Melville's this month and the Malle's from last spring.
