Presumably, someone will be issuing a 50th anniversary packaging this year. Whether or not it uses a new transfer...?The Dr. Strangelove Blu-Ray has actually been OOP for quite a while now (and is fetching high prices on Amazon)...

Re: Forthcoming Lists Discussion and Random Speculation Vol.
If there is any single film director who should have virtually all of his or her films in the CC it is Kubrick. I just seriously feel like his films have become so iconic, and so handcuffed by the studios that own them, that we may have to wait a very very very long time to see those films join CC.
I once believed foolishly that Rumble Fish would join the CC. A man can dream...

Spent the day working on the color correction on the Criterion blu ray of THE SHOOTING. Working from a scan of the original negative. What a revelation! Saw it side by side with the IP. At least twice the information. It's not possible for any print to be as good as a blu ray made from a 4K transfer. A DCP would be even better.
I will tell you now, you've never seen this movie before. I'VE never seen this movie before. Warren in one scene has tears in his eyes which were never visible in any print, video cassette or DVD. I'm only sad that Greg Sandor isn't here to see it. It's the way it looked when he shot it.

If this isn't out by the end of the year, that post would constitute cruel and unusual punishment.

I seem to remember that Criterion were originally planning to release on Blu a double bill of 'The Shooting' and 'Ride In The Whirlwind'. Does anyone know if that is still their intention?zedz wrote:If this isn't out by the end of the year, that post would constitute cruel and unusual punishment.

Yes, RIDE IN THE WHIRLWIND will be part of the box. No set date, but I hope sometime this year.

You ask me "box" implies at least 3 titles. Hoping for Cockfighter, assuming it isn't tied up with anyone else.

China 9, Liberty 37 would perhaps be a better match, and it has never had a proper home release on disc. Not sure what the sources would be like, but TCM have broadcast it in better quality than the bootlegs.

Re: Forthcoming Lists Discussion and Random Speculation Vol.
It'd be great, but back in 2008, when I asked him about a Criterion release of the three films, Monte Hellman told me there were rights issues for China 9, Liberty 37 he didn't forsee getting cleared up. I'd love for that to have changed in the intervening years, though.

A box only means that it will have more than one film.

Re: Forthcoming Lists Discussion and Random Speculation Vol.
The rights issue is probably the fact that China 9, Liberty 37 is owned by Warners.

The Shooting and Ride in the Whirlwind have been paired since birth. I don't think any other Hellman films have the kind of compatible production history that would allow for inclusion in a box set. Roger Corman (whose New World Pictures produced Cockfighter) had some production involvement, but if imdb is to be believed Proteus Films only ever made those two films, then hibernated until 1999 (and I wouldn't be surprised if that's a different Proteus Films entirely).

Why not just two separate spines then? True, some titles that were individual spines first have been paired up in box sets (Yojimbo/Sanjuro), but I can't think of a Criterion release that was a box set right out the gate, but only had two titles.

I guess I didn't think hard enough (though I don't count The Killing, which simply had the second film as a bonus feature).FerdinandGriffon wrote:The Killing

If memory serves, the only release of two films in an actual box set housing individual cases (rather than one consisting of a two-disc Amaray or the like) was for I Am Curious.

Ah, that's right. I was conflating its release with that of A Story of Floating Weeds/Floating Weeds.swo17 wrote:The Ozu is like that as well.

Maybe they'll pair them with the other two Nicholson collaborations, shot back-to-back in the Phillipines? Probably not though...zedz wrote:The Shooting and Ride in the Whirlwind have been paired since birth. Wasn't Monterey Pop like that as well? I've only seen the Blu-ray, so I'm not sure how it was originally released.
And weren't the Grey Gardens (before the Blu) and Brakhage sets the only way to get the second disc of each set, even if the first disc had their own individual releases originally?

Re: Forthcoming Lists Discussion and Random Speculation Vol.
I think it's highly likely Criterion will release Cockfighter. Bogdanovich said in an indiewire interview that Criterion was looking at Saint Jack. Same license holder. (Roger Corman)
