Anticipation is a sport all unto itself in the 21st century.

and don't forget there was a trailer for a trailer of Looper just this week.

The next step for Criterion will be increaseing production (or spreading it out) to having titles released every week (right now they typically only have 2 or 3 tuesdays each month they release titles) and then announcing new titles weekly rather than monthly. :-p

Imagine the elation here, people get to bitch about new releases and new cover art four times as often!

That would just be unbearable, since about the only thing that ameliorates the whining is the balance of titles announced (in the sense of "I can't believe they're releasing the TWO WORST FILMS EVER MADE!!!!! but at least I can drown my sorrows with that sublime masterpiece Tiny Furniture").

If they were announcing one or two titles at a time, everybody who wasn't a fan of those specific films would be acting like it was the end of the world / the end of Criterion's credibility, every seven days.

Sounds exactly like what we get every thirty days right now. :D

Sorry for the language, but fuck Kaurismäki. Him and Kusturica are probably the most overrated filmmakers of their generation.

The rest, however, is pretty interesting.

Is that... it? The Eclipse is really exciting, but geez, what a slow month

Criterion finally broke the Spine #450 barrier on Blu upgrades.

The Gremillon set is a must-have. The rest... meh. I liked Le Havre, but it's not something I need to own, and I feel pretty much the same way about the Stillmans.

I sure hope they had to delay some interesting stuff until August, because this is a pretty disappointing month.

Disappointing is right! Only 1 new BD title? What's the deal here?

Now we know why they didn't do any hinting or teasing before hand...

Whoa. Huzzah for Grémillon, but what the hell? Did half the staff quit? No wonder there were no hints this month.

"We are proud to announce our August releases!"

The Gremillion announcement makes the month though it begs the question why his films are resigned to Eclipse (not even a mainline DVD set with contextualising extras a la Sternberg? c'mon). Getting the Kaurismaki as well (one of his best as far as I'm concerned). I've not seen the Stillmans. Are they worth blindbuying or should I rent them first? (if it helps any, I love some of Woody Allen's late 70's/80's output (Manhattan, Hannah and her Sisters)

Kindergarten Cop mock art and coming up with the word Dunham-esque took up most of the month's time.

The Eclipse releases have been far more interesting than the mainlines this year.

Yep. Biggest news of the day right here, IMO. Now, I happen to really like The Last Days of Disco so that's a bonus, but this opens up a lot of possibilities that seemed less likely before.

Wonder if we'll finally get the Z blu that seemed like it should have been released initially.

When was the last month no mainline release was older than 1985?

Basically a December esque month. Christmas in July!

No EAH esque barebones bluray this month.

Hopefully the B&N sale overlaps with the Grémillon release.

Now that both Gorin and Grémillon have made their eclipse debuts can we get back to putting out some Ozu eclipse sets? We're more than overdue for round three.

I apologize if this issue has been discussed at length in other threads, but *something* is up at Criterion, right? The dwindling of extras, the bare-bones releases, films that seem appropriate for mainline Blu-Ray releases being relegated to Eclipse, the sometimes underwhelming choices for mainline releases, the curious Blu-Ray upgrades. Has Criterion publicly addressed any of these issues or is this just a combination of several factors occurring simultaneously: A new business strategy, inability to attain rights to release films on Blu, delays from contributing parties, the fact that they've already released over 600 films? I wish I knew, but May is the first month in a long time that I won't be buying any new Criterions and now it looks like July will be the same.

No.

Selection Bias + Confirmation bias = Anxiety & Paranoia.

Their pace of releases is still double what it was ten years ago.

I, along with many others, were convinced July would see a release of Nolan's "Following", because it would coincide with The Dark Knight Rises. They announced it in 2010, and Jon Mulvaney even sent me an email saying it would be happening in the near future. But that was 2 years ago.

I really wonder what's going on at Criterion

Because they didn't release some Christopher Nolan movie?

My understanding was that participation, or lack thereof, from Nolan was the hold up. Can't imagine he has a lot of free time right now. Perhaps in the Fall when TDKR gets its DVD/BD release.
