No hand-drawn cover art like the other Wes Anderson titles on Criterion? :-k

Nope.
But the painting works well for the film as well. You see a lot of paintings in this style in the movie itself.

It`s been a very long time since we had such a great month, both title and cover wise. Love the Mr. Fox cover, and great to see them already releasing BITWC.

I kind of feel like the set would look better without the weird squares in the middle of the exterior package though I get why they had to be there. Am I right that they are removable?

Are the discs easy to take out and put back in the slots?

The Blu-rays are easy to get out but oddly the DVDs are a little more difficult.

I like how since the DVDs are part of the individual BD page, the added thickness is about the length of nine of those cardboard half-sheets of paper, which wouldn't even add up to the width of one DVD. Hopefully this causes the Coaster Brigade to shut the everloving fuck up, but I won't get my hopes up

Yes. The way it's designed it wouldn't be much thinner if the DVDs were excluded. Like you said those fold out pages might combine to make the width of a DVD spine. I actually do like the fold outs. It's great overall, and very, very sturdy (and pretty heavy.)

Which is actually ironic considering this is an animation.

Perfect, since they'll never have to come out.

Anderson seems to have moved into preferring this richer, hand-painted look. It started with Michael Gaskell's wonderful teaser poster for Moonrise Kingdom. There are some similarities to that one in the background of the new teaser for Grand Budapest, but Gaskell didn't do it. Does anyone know who did?

Criterion has yet to credit the cover artists for this months releases. Surely they haven't stopped that helpful practice already.

If it were me, I'd face the package -- turn it so that the front is facing out. You can push it back flush with the rest of your discs and it will only take up an inch or two more space on the shelf.

That`s exactly what I will be doing, was thinking the same thing.

Those of us with 12" deep shelves shouldn't have any problems with it. I just wish they had done the full spine treatment, we have then number and text but we don't have the boxes that go behind the text. I understand they didn't want to obscure the artwork, but they could have done something like a 25% grey where the element would go that would help it fit better with the rest on the shelf.

I don't see how this would only take up an inch or two more space--this thing looks to be like 4-5 times longer across the front then it is wide across the spine.

I might need you to draw a diagram.

Matt wrote:From what Becker says, it's 7 1/2 inches wide, 6 1/4 inches tall, and probably no thicker than 2.5 inches.
It'll take a little over twice the shelf width by doing the way Jeff suggests.

I think I get it now--face out but with the spine pointed down instead of to the left. So that the guy making a fire on the blue mountain is facing up. Based on the dimensions that Matt noted, that seems like it would take up 3.75 more inches, or 2.5 times the space.

I'm just putting mine in a random drawer with the rest of my dvds. It solves all those problems, think about it.

But what are you going to serve the drinks on when you have seventeen friends around to watch Zatoichi Meets the One-Armed Swordsman?

Plastic coasters are pretty but cork ones actually work better.

Trick question! No one this site has friends. And if they did, they couldn't invite them over otherwise they'd see how much the Zatoichi set sticks out in my shelf that isn't 12'' deep and I'll lose respect of my peers and family.

Meant to post this earlier, but here are high-res versions for Zatoichi on Facebook (should be public)
