That was the most gracious handling of that possible by all involved.

World's smallest violin for the people who were announced as the winners with bombast instead of the actual winners
Dude, do you have no real concept of how awful it would be to think you won the Oscar and get up there and that happened
I just think it's worse for those who won the Oscar and will now be remembered as a weird trivia answer for that year Warren Beatty fucked up. It's bad for everyone.

This is the real story. Holding up the card, in particular, was a hell of a classy move.

The two films had a kinda unique brotherhood because of the genuine friendship of their main creators in Chazelle and Jenkins. If it was gonna happen I don't think it could have happened to two groups who were more prepared to handle it with such class.

This reminds me a bit of the story about Laurence Olivier forgetting to read the nominees the year Amadeus won...

Can we agree that move over streaker and Sacheen Littlefeather, we all just experienced the most memorable Oscar moment ever

I have no reason to disbelieve that this happened as they claim. It would have been better if Warren and Faye had recognized it was for the wrong category before they just blurted out a winner, though. How hard is it to say "wait everyone - this is the wrong envelope"? Don't just show Faye and have her read something, Warren. Say something to the behind the scenes aids.

I hope my initial reaction is proven wrong and that will cement both of those films in history moreso than a typical result would have. I worry that I'm incorrect about that, but. Damn, Moonlight is really great. La La Land was a whole lot of fun too. Thank God this isn't about awful prestige pic vs exciting, scrappy upstart. All scrap.

If you watch, Beatty is legit confused and shows the card to Dunaway, who sees the movie title and calls it out, thinking Beatty's behavior was part of a bit

It's hard to now that the whole story is out. He could've spoken up when he noticed the card was incorrect, but who knows how you'd react in that scenario. The right move would be to get someone's attention offstage right away. How do you make that mistake? Were there two Stone envelopes?

At least Beatty and Dunaway didn't conspire to read the wrong name, which was my first reaction. That would have tarnished both forever, now they both just have sad asterisks in Oscar infamy

I get being confused. Rule of thumb: don't speak when confused.
I don't think it's some egregious sin, just an unfortunate outcome.

I thought the folks from Price Waterhouse were supposed to be standing just off stage ready to run out in case just such a scenario took place? They sure took their time getting word out, waiting until after the entire group got on stage and three of them gave their speeches. This is basically a repeat of that awkward Miss Universe moment last year when Steve Harvey allowed the wrong woman to take her victory walk before announcing he read the wrong name.

I went back and re-watched and yeah, it's pretty obvious that Beatty was given the wrong card. He looked into the envelope again to see if there was a card with the correct result. This results are heavily audited and since there are people who bet on them in Vegas, this could have cause a real shitstorm. Gladly everyone was really gracious about everything and we didn't have a Steve Harvey fuck up.

I'm still most puzzled by where the fuck the Stone envelope was earthed from. How in the world could you possibly make that mistake?
