Unfortunately, probably the The Rest of it's Available on Hulu! Boxset.

As far as I know these two major Godard films have no Region 1 DVD (or Blu ray) release:

Every Man for Himself (aka Slow Motion) (1980)
Nouvelle Vague (1990)

There are probably more, maybe even some from the 60s. Is there a good chance that Criterion releases these in the future? I think Godard's 2nd phase (1980-2000?) is really fascinating, even though he seemed to have lost almost all interest in making "cinema". Cohen Media's recent releases of Hail Mary and For Ever Mozart on Blu-ray reminded me how much I enjoy the late Godard. I also am interested his work with video. There are many many short films he made in a style similar to Histoires du Cinema. Maybe a nice box set? 8-[

More likely Olive or Cohen would release them based on recent patterns.

Criterion just tweeted a picture of Rene Peron's poster for PASSION OF JOAN OF ARC. Hopefully this bodes well for an upgrade soon.

Luke, if you have Region B capabilities, the Masters of Cinema release of this film is one of the greatest physical media releases there is. (Probably my favorite). A book loaded with great readings, an astoundingly gorgeous restoration exclusive (for the moment) to the MOC disc and beautiful packaging featuring that very image on the cover.

Last year Michael mentioned on here that Gaumont is working on an even more extensive restoration than the MoC one. He speculated that Criterion would hold off releasing their edition until Gaumont was finished with theirs. Makes sense to me.

Passion of Joan of Arc is one of the few films that I would own on both MoC and Criterion, so I'd be glad if Criterion came up with a significantly different package.

I've yet to take the plunge into the international market, but this one may be the one that gets me started. Still, I am quite attached to Criterion... I hope they put out something to rival it! If not, I'll spring for the MoC.

Even just given the different intertitle, frame rate, and score options, I would be very surprised if a forthcoming Criterion release were to make the MoC anything close to redundant.

Although I haven't seen the MoC version, I would feel confident in blind buying it any day of the week. Not only because of the company's track record, but also because the restoration was overseen by James White, easily one of the two or three best film restorers working today. The man is nothing short of a miracle worker.

Now that Criterion have added The Lodger and Downhill to Hulu and Amazon Instant, perhaps an Alfred Hitchcock and Ivor Novello silent double feature may get a spine and join the collection? I'd like that.

Yeah, I've been expecting a big release of the Hitchcock Nine since the restorations started touring last year. Also, Criterion released Blackmail on laserdisc forever ago.

Unfortunately Blackmail is with Studio Canal, so unlikely Criterion would get it. That laserdisc has a commentary with then 90 year old Charles Bennett, the screenwriter.

It's hard to know what Criterion would do, On one hand, things like the Lloyd silents are getting their own releases, and certainly The Lodger would be well known enough for a spine (with Downhill along as a bonus feature film)

But then are the rest of the silents they have access to enough to stand alone? So perhaps they go with something like the Demy box, and do the titles they have (it's either 4 or 5, I don't recall offhand, but it's almost evenly split between SC and non SC owned films).

I'd say releasing The Lodger as a spine makes sense in a vacuum, but it leaves the problem of what to do with the lesser known titles. Is Hitchcock enough to do a mini set of 3? (If you did The Lodger/Downhill together). Perhaps. They did it with vonSternberg.

Will be interested to see how it shakes out.

I imagine even the worst and least popular Hitchcock is going to sell better based on his name alone than even most von Sternbergs. Not splitting these up seems unlikely.

I believe SC have The Ring, The Farmer's Wife, Champagne, The Manxman and Blackmail. The other four are with ITV (and thus Criterion in Region A). I'd say there's genuinely more chance of Criterion coming to some sort of agreement with Lionsgate/Studio Canal for the other five than there is of Lionsgate actually putting these out on Blu-ray.

I agree LG won't put them out but I think that just means we won't get them full stop, not that they'll suddenly give them to Criterion.

I posted in the Overlord thread that it was just announced that Criterion is putting on a screening of it in the Cannes Classics sidebar at next month's Cannes Film Festival. Of course a bunch of other films are screening in that sidebar, two of which in particular caught my eye: Jean Renoir's La Chienne and Kon Ichikawa's Tokyo Olympiad. Criterion aren't the ones responsible for those specific screenings, but it does make me wonder if those films are set to resurface soon, via Criterion or otherwise--sometimes Cannes Classics screenings come shortly before a big re-release (for example, I saw El Topo and The Holy Mountain in Cannes Classics just before they shook off Allen Klein's shackles, allowing them to be properly released on home video and enjoy a good theatrical re-release after decades in limbo). Then again, the three-hour Cabiria screened in Cannes Classics in 2006, and I haven't seen that resurface anywhere since.

I'll continue to clutch onto my laserdisc of La Chienne until further notice, I guess.

My most wanted, un-findable (except old R2 DVD?) Renoir film is still The Crime of Monseiur Lange. Don't know what the hold-up is there.

From my understanding reading this forum, the problem of Tokyo Olympiad is related to IOC-rights issues? So I don't expect that to come back in print. La Chienne, though, would be most welcome.

I believe the holdup is StudioCanal.

Is there any chance of COLOR OF THE POMEGRANATE being added to Criterion? They do have a ghost page for Parajanov.

The Color of Pomegranates would be incredibly welcomed, and seems like a great fit. Except for the fact that Kino seems to have already released it, though if memory serves it looks pretty terrible.
