What are you complaining about? Warner Bros. just gave you three Tim Holt films from 1942; why do you need any more?

George Minafer: "Well, you see my Aunt Fanny has her mind made up about this particular boarding house...and the only way we're going to make ends meet is for me to become a Deputy U.S. Marshall and go out west to investigate two towns ruled by vigilantes."

Roger Bronson: "You certainly are the most practical contract player R.K.O. has ever had!"

George Minafer: "Right...it's better to be a practical RKO contract player then to have my contract torn up and have my ass thrown off the studio lot"....

Seventy isn't much of an anniversary, though, is it? I bet they hold out for 100.

Its not a great film, although as I recall it was quite good in establishing a 'Greene-land' mood, but I'd like to add Confidential Agent' to my adaptation of Graham Greene works collection
(which reminds me I've got to watch 'The Tenth Man' yet)

The Great Caruso is advertised in the latest Critic's Choice Video catalog as their exclusive. They have two listings - one is for some foreign (Chinese?) bootleg and this one.

I died a lot inside reading that. I knew it was inevitable, but to see one of the greatest films of all time relegated to archive hell is depressing. Couldn't this be the exception to their dumping rule. I guess I can finally see it whenever I want to now I guess.

Edit: also I can't find it on their site.

How long does it usually take for archive titles to get onto Amazon? I want to get Saint Joan and The Merry Widow, but don't want to pay their shipping.
Edit: Also should mention that the UK of The Locket is great with the only problem being that one reel has a prominent scratch.

Not a poor NTSC-PAL conversion then, like other RKO titles in the Odeon series?

It didn't appear that way to me though I am not entirely certain how to identify a conversion. The run time was a little under 88 minutes if that helps any.

Thanks - that run time is intriguing as all my books and internet sources (including Warner Archive) give 86 or even 85 minutes for The Locket. DVD Beaver states 85m 27s for the WA release. With PAL speed-up - which would indicate a proper PAL transfer - I'd expect it to be 83 minutes at most. Could the almost 88m run time include material added by Odeon, like copyright notices?

The other giveaways of an improper NTSC-PAL (or PAL-NTSC) conversion, to my eyes, are a soft-looking image - often softer than good VHS, though it might only be obvious on a large screen - and sometimes motion blurring or even jerkiness. They often have a grey, low contrast look, too, with no real blacks.
