Portman deserves to win (seriously people, see Black Swan before you proceed to shit all over it), but Gerwig really does deserve to be nominated. It's a shame that Focus didn't see more Oscar potential in Greenberg, but they're notoriously awful when it comes to releasing great films early in the year.

^ Surprised The Social Network was so dominant in the major categories. NBR is known for spreading the wealth. The King's Speech got skunked, when many expected it to be an NBR favorite. Overall, these awards probably slightly shift the balance of power between The Social Network and The King's Speech, which are almost certain to be duking it out for the top spot. They probably solidified Lesley Manville as the fifth spot for Best Actress and maybe Jacki Weaver for Best Supporting Actress. Somewhere and The Town probably boosted their smaller awards-season profiles too. Black Swan, The Kids Are All Right, and 127 Hours can go fuck themselves, apparently.

Thank god, I have not seen a worse movie this year (and this is after seeing Enter the Void) and probably won't see a worse movie for years.

Mark my words: Ben Affleck will be nominated for Best Director

Also, how neat and well-deserved to see Youth in Revolt named!

There's something so bizarre about NBR. They always pick box office hits that are only kind of okay (Inception, Toy Story 3, Shutter Island) and ignore good stuff that came later in the year (127 Hours, Black Swan), and namedrop movies that were supposed to have been critically successful but weren't (Hereafter), though they give credence to great films that haven't gotten enough attention... oh, wait. Nevermind.

Edgar Wright was nominated for Best Director and the cast for Best Ensemble. (Plus the nods for Michelle Williams, Amy Adams, Greta Gerwig, et. al.)

I meant in the best picture category, though maybe not enough Scott Pilgrim would have been more accurate. Plus Gerwig aside I imagine that's not too far off from the oscars.

Just poking a bit of fun at the surprising nods for Scott Pilgrim. Greta Gerwig gave my favorite performance in what is undoubtedly one of the best films of the year. Criminally underrated. As you say, she doesn't have much of a shot with the Academy though. I'd say that Michelle Williams is a bit of a longshot too, unless the film starts to catch on in a big way. She's amazing in the film, probably her best performance. Amy Adams may sneak in, but I suspect Melissa Leo is far more likely.

Here's Richard Brody's take on the best of the year (featuring love for Greenberg and Scott Pilgrim!).

That's not far off, actually! I was taken aback that there even is a Detroit Film Critic Society (even though one member is a longtime acquaintance of mine) given how little criticism is valued in this town. The Detroit Free Press dumped their resident critic a few years back and has been piping in Associate Press reviews ever since.

Those were the only "international" films to open there this year, I'm assuming.

I'm getting an aneurysm trying to figure out what possible criteria could result in those two awards.

In other news, it's nice to see Bright Star finally get some attention, even if it's in the most predictable categories. Abbie Cornish might have ended up with an empty mantelpiece, but at least she'll always have the film.

Well they're both Australian actors (though Worthington was born in the UK) which does seem more than a little significant in these circumstances...

...and looking up previous winners and nominees, it would appear that Australian actors only are eligible for the award.
