I didn't realize this was released.
Excellent job, as usual, 2nd Run.
I've heard this mentioned and referred to many times, but never had a chance to see it.
Looking forward to it.

The Cinema Ritrovato Awards for 2014 have just been announced, including:
BEST REDISCOVERY: IKARIE XB1
(Jindřich Polák, Czechoslovakia, 1963) – Second Run Features

An almost forgotten gem, inspired by a Polish novel by Stanislaw Lem and originally butchered in the West, is rightly considered by Joe Dante “a groundbreaking celestial saga”. It had a strong impact on major SF works of the 60s and 70s such as Kubrick's 2001, and Second Run offers a stunning restoration of the uncut version, plus some scholarly essays.

A great surprise and an unexpected honour for us! Totally delighted!
Congratulations also to Eureka Entertainment, The Criterion Collection, Arrow Films & Video, and BFI who have also received deserved recognition!

Ooh! Please tell me you'll be following this up with a Blu-ray release of the new restoration?

Yes, I'd double dip for this.

Came to this page from google and rolled an account just to pass on this information:

I think Ikarie XB1 might be making it to blu-ray quite soon. There appears an EEA-funded effort to restore several Czech films, but the announcement is not clear whether a Blu Ray will be made available. I am assuming that it will- blu ray is an accepted format in CZ now and many stores sell them.

I hope this is interesting info!

Yes it has been newly restored, and I'm too hoping for a Blu-ray at some point (preferably from Second Run).

In fact, there's a Second Run sale on at Arrow Store right now - £6.99 for select titles - and I'm wondering if it's 'safe' to buy Ikarie XB-1 knowing it won't be upgraded to Blu-ray within the next year or so? Obviously I wouldn't want to buy it on DVD and then 6 months later a Blu-ray version is announced...

Any chance Bikey could give us a 'yay' or 'nay'? [-o<

For the record, I'd definitely upgrade my Second Run DVD.

Isn't Ikarie coming to Blu-ray in the Czech Republic next month?

Also, would love to see Vojtěch Jasný's When the Cat Comes on Blu.

I'm a little wary, given this title and The Round-Up (also on sale) have had recent remasters and seem like high-profile enough sellers that an upgrade wouldn't be out of the question, and similarly that a sale like this would be a good way to clear the existing stock. For these reasons I'd expect we won't hear an answer either way.

I was actually thinking this when I wrote my above post...a little frustrating, but also understandable.

No plans as yet since there are so many other films that need releasing for the very first time, although we can see that IKARIE is a title that would of course lend itself to a BD upgrade (among others).

I'd double-dip for a Second Run BD, and would happily do the same for a bunch of other currently DVD-only films SR have released.
