Spring Breakers 2 shoots this summer. Plot revolves around the girls getting abducted by a sect of evangelical christians who try and brainwash them into finding god and morality. To be directed by Jonas Auckerland.
This is one of those, "Was originally a different script but changed a few details at the last minute to make it an actual sequel in order to sell it" those kind of films, isn't it? It happened before with something like Pumpkinhead II: Blood Wings for example.

I doubt it, simply because I have a hard time believing that out of all the properties they could try to cash in on, Spring Breakers seemed the most lucrative

Wouldn't S. Darko count? Yeah, it has some connections to its predecessor but you could argue it functions the same way.

Yes, but I get the impression (based on my theatrical experience) that a good portion of ticket sales came from otherwise mainstream filmgoers who were 'tricked' into seeing this movie by the misleadingly MTVish trailer. I heard a number of people asking "what the hell was that?" in the lobby aftewards, and the IMDB score of 5.3 seems to back up the fact that a lot of the audience didn't really know what they were getting into. (Yes, I know IMDB scores are never indicative of the quality of a movie, but they are a decent enough guage of the popular response).

Conversly, Donnie Darko was a pretty big cult classic throughout my college years; I'd wager that it has a following that would be much more receptive to the idea of a sequel.

Well, the film must have its fans though. I can't really think of another reason why they'd want to make a "sequel" to Spring Breakers if that's the case.
