I'm not so sure about that. Coppola (and Faris) didn't pull any punches with that characterization. I believe you when you say that there was no affair in real life but the way it played out in the movie struck me as something other than friendship, otherwise why the scathing portrayal?
Because I believe she was hurt and the characterization works better when heightened. I doubt jonze is an airhead like how Ribsi plays him. Jonze's Her is obviously from his side of things, so I guess we'll never know what happened there

Of course 12/23 is when I'll be driving up to the Sacramento area for the holidays, so it looks like I won't be seeing it until the at least 1/6. Grrr.

195 minutes, unless they're misreporting.

I believe that's based on the reports from a few weeks ago. Considering Hugo actually screened at festivals in a workprint that still had some cutting to do, I'd expect we'll find out properly about a bit of a more trimmed version once it inevitably makes an appearance at one of the November festivals.

New image from Scorsese's Silence.
Runtime is down to 159 minutes, although it's still not a final cut.

Paramount has shown clips to the press of upcoming releases of their new films. This was what IndieWire said about Silence.
The latter is perhaps the most anticipated of the lot. “Silence” has been a passion project for Martin Scorsese over the last 28 years, but the challenging subject matter (Jesuit priests spreading the gospel of Christianity in feudal Japan) has made its potential box office performance a question mark. Paramount confirmed the film, starring Adam Driver, Liam Neeson and Andrew Garfield, would open this Christmas just a few weeks ago, and they debuted the first footage, which Variety described as having “a hallucinatory quality.”

The 45-second teaser included quick images of a famished-looking Liam Neeson praying, Japanese men being hanged on crosses and breathtaking landscape shots of the Japanese countryside. No word on when the teaser will debut online, but Grey confirmed Scorsese is still toying with the film in the editing booth. It looks like the final cut of “Silence” will be coming in at the last minute.

Pete Hammond from Dealine Hollywood (dated Oct 14)...
“This is Marty’s best movie,” Silence producer Irwin Winkler told me when I ran into him at the Motion Picture Television Fund’s 95th anniversary event. Sure, he is high on the film because he produced it, but keep in mind this is also the man who also produced Scorsese classics Raging Bull and Goodfellas, so this kind of praise is not to be taken lightly. His wife Margo concurred that the movie is a stunner.....Scorsese has been editing it, and when last I spoke to executive producer Ken Kao a few weeks ago it was a little more than three hours long. When we spoke, Winkler said it has been tightened currently to 2 hours and 39 minutes. Paramount has set a limited release for December 23, going wider with hoped-for Oscar nominations in January. Can’t wait for this one.

Eh, he's the producer. I have high hopes for this, but what else is Winkler going to say? ("It's not bad...minor Scorsese, but one of the better ones.")

I found this to be an excellent article so thanks for posting the link. It was particularly interesting to find out exactly when Scorsese was given a copy of the novel.

My only slight worry is that I wish there was some mention that a previous adaptation of the novel already exists in Shinoda's version. I understand that the new film will not be a remake as it's a different adaptation of the same work, and I think there's no doubt that the material is perfect for Scorsese so I'm hoping for a great film, but, particularly given Scorsese's work in raising awareness of and preserving older films, it would be nice to see some acknowledgement of the earlier adaptation.

It's similar to The Departed, I think, where there seemed to be little acknowledgement of the film being an adaptation of Infernal Affairs.

I have a memory of The Departed which was that the movie team tried to downplay the importance of Infernal Affairs over The Departed (Monaghan said he worked on an English translation of the screenplay but never watched the movie).

It was very strange. It was an obvious inspiration and obviously even more than this, but it was as if they wanted to make people forget about it somehow.

Besides the Region 2 MOC DVD, I believe it's also currently available to watch on the Filmstruck Criterion Channel as it was up on Hulu prior to the move. I'm not yet a Filmstruck subscriber, so perhaps someone else can confirm?

It is indeed on Filmstruck along with 9 or 10 other Shinoda films.

Lovely trailer, though I can't help but feel a little manipulated as to the degree of tension in the final product. Seems like every moment of someone being warned about danger has made it in, as well as every instance of sudden movement.
