Hopefully something to do with adding Filming Othello?

Or there's a rights dispute.

Do we have a source for this info? The Criterion site still lists a 5/23 release date.

I'd be happy to wait another few months if it meant Filming Othello could be included.

Criterion apparently directly informed Blu-Ray.com of this.

They probably wanted to remove extras to better fit in with their new business model

Yes, they sent out an e-mail today about this. The e-mail states "We will have updates shortly on the new date."

I figured this was happening once I got an email from Amazon last week informing me the release date changed and would reach out to me once a new date was known.

:?

Hopefully the delay means more extras and not rights related.

Strange... there's still no update and the Criterion website still says May 23rd.

Now listed as September 26. No mention of Filming Othello.

The "More!" added was:

Souvenirs d’“Othello,” a 1995 documentary about actor Suzanne Cloutier by François Girard

That addition was pointed out on the last page. It doesn't look like there's anything new here.

New extra:
Filming “Othello,” Welles’s last completed film, a 1979 essay-documentary

Be still my heart! Hadn't imagined they'd manage that. And me with my preorder still standing at ~$22.

Wellesnet say that Filming Othello will be from a new 2K scan!

Wow. News I never thought I'd hear. I've never preordered before, but now I have no choice.

Filming Othello is such an obvious supplement to this release that I'm glad Criterion took the time to clear the rights and do a fresh scan. Given that just twenty years ago it was difficult to see much of Welles' canon, I'm amazed how much of it is now readily available in HD.

Six years ago I was getting into film and The Trial, Chimes, Inmortal Story, Othello, and Macbeth were all hard to come across!

EDIT: Wow, that 1955 cut looks rough, was it known to be in a rough state?

I don't know - judging from the screengrabs, only the shot of Desdemona from the U.S. version looks significantly worse (as in softer) than the European equivalent. I don't see a striking drop in quality by comparing the other stills, but am happy the European cut looks the best since I think that's the all-round better version.

Screen-caps 2 and 3 (the doves and Desdemona) definitely show the most difference.
