I wish they would have upgraded the DVD edition of this with the new extras

What makes you think they aren't doing that?

Ignore my post. Earlier there was only a pre-order option for the BluRay. Now they've added the DVD

Curious about the 4.0 surround sound - how does that work with a film like this? It can't be that elaborate or spread out, can it?

4.0 isn't particularly elaborate since it only has a mono surround channel (the other 3 being LCR). The film was originally released in Ultra Stereo (at least according to imdb), which is 2.0 surround and presented that way on the DVD. For the remix they've presumably taken the matrixed center and mono surround channel from the original 2.0 track and given them their own discrete channels.

I can imagine this will give more vibrancy for any game scenes/shots.
Yes, that's stating the obvious =].

I thought this new Blu-ray would have an uncropped image as stated before about the restoration done.
Looking at the DVDBeaver caps, looks to be same framing.

Same here - maybe the screen caps touting the restoration were actually poorly matched?

Didn't someone note that the Criterion DVD release in the comparison was also uncropped?

Watching this right now ... so far, so good. Obviously there are limitations due to the source but there seems to be nothing too glaring. There's the occasional interlacing and some of the video broadcasts they use (like the sports broadcasts) are very apparent. But all in all, a very nice high definition transfer.

Quick question - I've yet to see the new restoration on Blu-Ray, but since they did a new video transfer, does the film now "move" like video? That is, instead of the 24 fps motion we're used to from watching this transferred to a film print, are we now watching the native 30 fps motion?
Personally, I would prefer it if they went back to something like 24 (i.e. something "film-like"), but I understand if they don't want to futz with the frame rate in the interest of preserving image quality.

I couldn't say anything regarding this, because I didn't focus at all on that while watching it last week.
However, except the clearly poorly defined look, but it moved quite fine to me.
