Considering studio releasing DVDs is in UK and the one linked above is in LA, I think it's a different Yume Pictures. Here's a comparison between their Red Angel and Fantoma's.

I hope they improve their quality. Haven't most of their releases to date been pretty mediocre?

Kim Stim? They released Tony Takitani, didn't they? I thought that release was more than adequate, for a newer film.

Vibrator is a great, great film - one of the best Japanese films so far this century, as far as I'm concerned - and Hiroki's subsequent It's Only Talk is also excellent, so I'm looking forward to checking out some of his earlier work.

Sort of related: I notice that Yanagimachi's even better Who's Camus Anyway? (the best film I've seen this year) is due out in R1 in December, from a label called Film Movement. Is anybody familiar with this label and able to comment on the quality of their releases?

Who's Camus's been out for a couple months. I have it. The disc is 16x9. The contrast and color look right, but the movement is not always smooth. "Acceptable" transfer, I'd say.

New Yorker just confirmed that they will be releasing CELINE & JULIE along with possible other Rivette's in 2007.

What was I thinking? Strand released Tony Takitani, Kim Stim was responsible for burned in subs on the Taisho Trilogy box. Yeah, this might be a let down.

On Feb 23, two excellent Japanese films will be released on r2jp:

Sion Sono's Noriko's Dinner Table, with English subtitles, and

Takashi Miike's 46 Oku Nen no Koi (Big Bang Love, Juvenile A), no subs listed as of yet.

Finally, a new Masumura with english subtitles (though it's not my first choice), A Lustful Man (found at yesasia.com). HK release, or not (coming along with Manji and Blind Beast from Intercontinental Video), I'm dying to see this one, and I'm sure there are lots of other Masumura fans that feel the same. Here's to hoping that Seisaku's Wife, A Wife Confesses, and a few other heavy hitters get the same treatment in the near future.

Hmm, I have sudden flashbacks to December 2005 when they even listed it on their page...

My contact at New Yorker was also correct about Hail Mary, roughly the same time of year last year.

Ishii Teruo's Blind Woman's Curse (1970) coming Discotek Media (04/06/07), starring Kaji Meiko (Stray Cat Rock: Sex Hunter, Female Prisoner #701: Scorpioin, Lady Snowblood). It has Chris Desjardins commentary.

Young Aphrodites, (Nikos Kourndoros, 1963) to be released on May 8th by Koch Entertainment. This sounds really interesting, and it apparently swept up awards at the Berlin fest in 1963. Here's a nice piece on the film at CineMythology, which, states that the director has recently changed the film's title to The Mark of Aphrodite.

Question here about a forthcoming DVD label.

In this interview, earlier this year, Tony Rayns talked his "involvement in a project to start a new DVD label," adding that it "might come to some fruition quite soon." Given Rayns' taste, interests and connections, this could prove to be a worthwhile enterprise. Anybody know the lowdown?

No info then? I'd be interested to know what the deal is?

Has anyone mentioned Arrow (UK) releasing the Taviani's Padre Padrone? God I hope they don't mess it up.

They have some other releases, but I don't think they're a great distributor despite having some good titles. More info on their website

New product from Artificial Eye. Including a boxset of films by Aki Kaurismaki, Derek Jarman's Blue, Paolo Sorrentino's Amico di Famiglia (which I really liked)

Konrad Wolf's powerful WWII film, I Was Nineteen (1968, bw) will be released by First Run Features on October 23.

Frank Beyer's, Traces of Stone (1966, bw scope) will also be released on October 23.

Great to see some German New Wave after a long drought.

Excellent news! I've been waiting for the First Run release for quite some time, as the German R2 doesn't have English subs. If First Run's work on Rotation is anything to go on, it will probably be a PAL->NTSC port, but a very acceptable one in comparison to most other U.S. companies'.

Yes, it's great to see Traces of Stone. Very clever film with beautiful black and white scope photography.

I'd like to see more German films from the 50s and 60s on DVD:

- Ladislao Vajda's (The Miracle of Marcelino) 1958 film, It Happened in Broad Daylight (1958) which was remade as The Pledge.

- Konrad Wolf's, Sterne (Stars) (1959, bw).

- Michael Verhoeven's mercilessly unflinching anti-Vietnam War, O.K. (1970), which festival president, George "A Place in the Sun" Stevens demanded to be withdrawn from the 1970 Berlin International Film Festival, which ended with the festival collapsing when other directors withdrew their own films in protest.

Still trying to find Le Bonheur on DVD? Anyone know if this may be in the works?
