Well if it's on Criterion's slate, then there are plenty of other films to keep me occupied until then. I'm just glad to hear I'll eventually get a chance to see it...

Confirmed where?

Welcome to the forum, Jimaku-- I didn't see you come in. I believe the pseudo-confirmation of
Yotsuya Ghost Story can be found
here.

Thanks for the welcome!
The link says that Criterion acquired the rights, but Criterion holds the rights to far more films than they've ever released, or will ever release. Buying the rights for an obscure film like this is cheap and easy and Criterion can afford to do so without thinking twice. Making the committment to finding elements, doing a full digital restoration, and commissioning a new English translation and commentary (none of which is cheap) is a whole different story.

But that wasn't what you asked for confirmation of.

The documentary on Jigoku has footage of Yatsuya that looked restored and no footage from any of the other movies they talked about (excpet Jigoku of course) which I think is a big clue that Yatsuya is hopefully in the works. I have the greek dvd and I agree this is an amazing classic ghost story and I'm ready to buy it again.

Yep - I think this is the clearest evidence that this is on its way. It's very rare for Criterion to include extensive clips from another movie in any of their featurettes (even when they've already released the film).

Still no news?
No response yet. I managed to extract the skipped over scene from the disc and put a clip of it up on a
web page here so people can see and hear what baby godzilla is talking about. The footage is definitely there on the disc; some weird glitch is making the DVD player jump over it. Hopefully more people who own the disc and love the film will write Criterion and encourage them to take some kind of action -- either a recall or replacement.

A lot of glitches recently..this one, the wrong box for Rohmer, booklets missing. I wonder if it's anything to do with Image Entertainment.

I don't think Image Ent. had anything to do with it. They just handle distribution. I think it was more of a case of Quality Control going a bit amock during the vacation months -- August and September.

I'm more than a tad curious about this. I had been very excited about the release and was going to buy it during the november sale, but I'd rather not if a second run will be corrected. I wish they'd at least reply to someone about this.

You and me both. I finally returned my copy to the online retailer I bought it from for a refund. A shame because it's a truly beautiful copy of the film, and the little doc included is very nice. I let Criterion know my 'happiness' with their new policy of silently correcting mistakes behind their customers backs by cancelling my pre-order for their upcoming Janus book. Oh well! Whatever...

I just got this at my local retailer and watched it last night. I did notice what appeared to be a jump cut, and after checking my copy at lunch today, and seeing the missing scene in this thread, it is definitely a disc authoring error.Too bad.Shit happens!I will be e-mailing Criterion asap though.

Just cancelled my pre-order. I'll wait for Criterion to issue a second printing before I buy this.

Unfortunately I just received my refund today, so I'm out of luck. I wrote her back to ask if the corrected version is in a "second printing" package or not...

Here's one more:
Angie Bucknell wrote:I am glad to hear that your retailer took the disc back.
We will be releasing the corrected version in a package that will indicate "second printing" on the back of the outer wrap.
It's hard to give an exact date but you can expect the new version to be ready in about a month.
Thanks again for your feedback and support.
My best,
Angie Bucknell
Case closed!

Thank God, now we can get back to discussing what a cool film Jigoku is.And what a great choice it was for Criterion.

Just a minute, let me go get my dental instruments & oil of cloves.
Seriously though, this is one that I'm planning on getting too. My advice, email DVDPacific (or where-ever you buy from. I think DVDPacific is cheapest) and ask them if it's the corrected version (they're very good about responding to emails). I think it was said earlier in the thread that corrected versions actually say something on the cover ("second printing" or something like that)
