I have to wonder whether the international audience cares about "credibility". How many SM viewers are familar with the comix anyway? In any event, it seems likely that it will be in the top 3 international B.O. for 2007, along with Hairy Potter and Transformers. And it seems to be doing better on a comparative basis than all the other threequels (let's see how Rush Hour 3 does, however).

Look no further than the Jurassic Park franchise. It makes a difference (at least in franchises), regardless of generalizations about International box office. The often higher foreign take for tentpoles is just a popular excuse to use when domestic returns are disappointing. It doesn't really change the fact that success in the US is still critical.

I cannot understand why the same studio, who made shit-tons of money from Spider-Man 2, a film where Raimi did have creative control, would suddenly think that they know better than him.

I can't understand that. I'm not surprised by it, but I cannot get my head around it.

Edit: Company, rather than studio, as it was Marvel who kept sticking their nose in. That makes it somewhat understandable. It's their IP, etc., but still. Was Raimi suddenly out of touch or something? Did Marvel decide that number 2 stunk it up? (A side note: the only Spider-Man film I've enjoyed thus far is #2, which is great)

Marvel (Joe Quesada) thinks that they know better than the people who created the characters, so that is why they keep revamping/resetting them every 2-3 years. Just Wiki Spider-Man and see how much they decided to crap on the character and over 60 years of storylines on the comic books. That is why they keep driving more and more fans away each year and their comic book sales continue to decline.
