Unrelated, but Wilfred's one joke has already worn thin one episode in, I can't imagine watching this again. It doesn't help that I remember watching the original Australian short film from many years ago on Sundance, so the joke's already old now.

Wilfred was bad, which was what I expected. I liked the first few minutes before the titular character shows up, and Wood as a depressed out of work lawyer would have probably made a better series.

I thought the same thing. "Huh, this isn't too bad..." And then that obvious repeating gag shows up and in addition to the dull dog jokes makes tired pot jokes and bathroom humor jokes and... God, there's twelve more episodes of this? Really?

Have the new season episodes been any good?

They've been okay so far. Nothing great though.

Bad news, nobody.

There have been about two truly great episodes per 13-episode season lately, and even at that percentage, it's sad to see this show go. Still a better batting average than The Simpsons since Season 11 or so.

You know, I thought that final season of 13 episodes was a great send off for the show. I wonder how clear it was that the show was going to be cancelled, because compared to many of the previous 'final' episodes of the show where the goodbye felt a little more arbitrary, really this entire season felt like an extended send off for all of the characters, even to the extent of feeling a bit fatalistic and death obsessed at times. There seemed a lot of care taken to provide fan service by building scenes to involve almost all of the significant secondary characters, from Lrrr and Jrrr to Nixon and Calculon (and even Geunter and Dr Banjo!), and there were even many nostalgic returns to familiar locations, from the sewer mutants and Robot Hell to the porn-loving alien's shop and back to New Years Eve 1999 yet again, all seeming to build towards the return trip to the Moon in the final episode, mirroring Fry's first trip to outer space.

It also has one of the best final lines for an endlessly rewatchable TV series: "What do you say? Do you want to go around again?"

This is the weirdest variant of a zombie show.

The first episode of this reboot was just okay. As a series that's gone from network TV, to a cable network, to a streaming platform, there were already jokes to be made about its mere existence at this point. And that's mostly what this season premiere was about, in addition to commenting on how streaming has changed viewer consumption habits since Futurama last went off the air in 2013. There were 2 or 3 good laughs, but the much of the humor felt too forced, or too detached from anything else that was happening in the episode or in series' past. The basic premise here centered on bringing Calculon back from the dead to reboot All My Circuits (an obvious metaphor). There was a scene where the All My Circuits director and showrunner scolded the writers for not cranking out scripts fast enough to keep up pace with the shooting schedule. Bringing actors back from the dead, and a scene concerning overworked writers...right in the midst of the current real-world WGA and SAG strikes, who are arguing over the very same issues within the episode? This episode likely went into production several months ago, long before the strikes, but still. I'm not sure if it was intentional or not, but this comes off as ironic at best, tone-deaf at worst.

All in all, though, it wasn't the worst start...again, just okay. I reckon from here, Futurama will explore more narrative possibilities and feature more character moments that we've come to expect. Whether or not they will be as successful as the Comedy Central Era (which wasn't as good as the Fox Era) remains to be seen. Here's hoping.
