Matt, shame on you for this slip in grammar. I expect only the best from you in terms of spelling and grammar, so this one threw me.

This has been an excellent year of releases with additions of long awaited and expected films, more modern films, films introduced from previously unrepresented countries, even a silent film!

Some great chances taken as well which was good to see coming off the previous couple of years of issues of respected, unarguable, classics. Inevitably I think this years releases got a much more mixed response, but it certainly adds a breadth of subject matter to the collection - Mr Arkadin, Equinox, Koko, Kicking and Screaming, Metropolitan, Fists In The Pocket, Jigoku, Solo Con Tu Pareja and, from the sound of just the title, Symbiopsychotaxiplasm have certainly given us a lot to talk about, and even though many might have flaws all sound interesting enough to try!

It was also good to see these mixed in with the 'classic' films like Virgin Spring, Kind Hearts and Coronets, Six Moral Tales, La Bete Humaine etc, and from the look of the first two months of next year we are in for a similarly exciting combination of established and celebrated vs worthy but neglected or overlooked titles. My one suggestion would be the same as last year - a little more emphasis on modern and introducing previously unrepresented films, filmmakers, film subjects etc from around the world (although I'd be just as excited about the release of another Iranian film, a couple more Pialat films or Erice's Dream of Light/Quince Tree Sun!)

Release of the year (in order but leaving out reissues until the next category)

1. Six Moral Tales
2. Pandora's Box
3. The Complete Mr Arkadin
4. The Double Life of Veronique
5. The Spirit of the Beehive

Best Reissue

Seven Samurai (but the others were extremely close runners-up! - I think if it was a 'most improved' category I would have gone for Playtime instead, but since it is 'best reissue' overall I have to choose one of my absolute favourite films!)

Most Disappointing Release

Difficult. Rather than choose a release that I don't believe 'deserves' to be in the collection (discussion on the forum has ranged from Metropolitan to Louis Malle, to a no-budget horror film and the importance of the Cuaron film), my vote has to go to one of the discs that had problems that, honestly, I wouldn't have noticed if it hadn't been mentioned on the forum, but which is a more tangible 'disappointment' than having a negative personal reaction to a particular film. This means that I'll probably go for Jigoku since that is the only release to have a scene missing, albeit a short one. I'd also balance that small (but important) criticism against the inclusion of the interesting interviews.

Best Commentary

I'll go for the chat between Steven Soderbergh and Lodge Kerrigan on Clean, Shaven.

Best Single Supplement

I'll choose the Barbet Schroeder chat with Eric Rohmer, just edging out the My Life In Cinema interview on the Seven Samurai disc (though I've a feeling that if I'd gotten to the Hands over the City DVD Neapolitan Diary might be in with a shot at this - after all it is a whole second feature length film!)

Best Package Design

The Complete Mr Arkadin

Best Surprise

A Nos Amours - the first Maurice Pialat film for me!

(just beat out Harlan County, USA)

Release of the Year - Late Spring, Seven Samurai, Sweetie, Metropolitan, and Dazed and Confused

Best Reissue - Seven Samurai. I haven't seen it before this release, but it's an amazing package and an amazing film.

Most Disappointing Release nothing really, just that there is an error with Jigoku. I didn't watch it, just sent it in to get a corrected copy, but I don't even know if I'll get one, I don't recall and official notice for it.

Best Commentary Mr Pena on Late Spring. I forgot that I listened to this one. While it is the only one I have heard, it is really good.

Best Single Supplement - The only supplement I checked out was the soundtrack for Clean, Shaven. I hope for more future titles to come with soundtracks this way, less cost for them to put out the actual soundtrack offer it to you to make a copy if you want, and it doesn;t tak emuch space...

Best Package Design - Dazed and Confused

Best Surprise - A toss up between Metropolitan and Sweetie, I think I enjoyed Metropolitan more.

Forum Member of the Year - I like SncDthMnky (read as "Stink-da-Dinky") He's very positive and perceptive, I liked Zedz too.

Richard Cranium Award - There's this one person who I feel works on Criterions graphic design team that posts here, I think it;s a girl, she seems crabby.

PS, I dug Equinox, Kicking and Screaming, and Clean, Shaven as well.....
