Button needs to get a nom because it cost a kajillion dollars and it is an art movie with stars. There always needs to be at least one art movie with stars on the slate. (Sean Penn is not a "star".) I'm not sure Revolutionary Road will make the cut.

The Academy has little interest in "good." They've surprised me with their choices the past couple of years, but maudlin, "inspiring," crowd-pleasing dramas are their bread and butter. It would be perfectly in keeping with their modus operandi to reward Fincher for a lesser film. The film supposedly appeals to the Academy's aged constituency, and despite the mixed reviews, is still favored by most pundits to lead the nominations. I don't think it has any chance of winning Best Picture, but I'd be pretty surprised if it didn't get a nom.

I think we have yet to see the best of Brolin and his supporting performance in Milk definitely wasn't up there, not the best of the whole year certainly.

You can say that again. He disappeared into that role.

No actor this year deserves recognition more than Marsan. He was just a force of nature in that role.

Wow, Vicky Cristina Barcelona is emerging as a dark horse in the race this year. It will be great for Allen if it picks up some noms, and more importantly, some wins.

Whoa. That might be the worst slate of nominees I've ever seen. Even coming from the Globes this is shocking.

No Milk or Doubt, which is surprising. Burn After Reading and Mamma Mia nominated in the Comedy/Musical category... huh? I like the actor in a comedy category, especially Farrell and Gleeson both being nominated. But what the hell is going on in the Supporting Actor category? Cruise, really? Is that really how hard they were scraping the bottom of the barrel? No Marsan, Franco, Brolin... eep. Just awful work by these voters this year.

correct. no reason to take any of their nominations seriously.
of course, there' not really any reason to take anyone's nominations seriously. Unless you're invested in how box office might perk up due to nominations, which is why the Academy Awards exist to begin with (and to have dinner with celebrities, if you're everyone else).

To be fair, their Supporting Actress nominations are pretty much 5/5 what I'd predict for the Oscars right now

Edit: Well, maybe DeWitt gets in somewhere, so 4/5

I knew what it was only because I received a screener of it a few days ago. My WTF moment came when I opened the envelope. I like Emma Thompson, but probably not enough to watch this movie.

Last Chance Harvey has quietly been hyped/pushed for an Oscar nod for Hoffman over the past year. Summit actually delayed its initial release date for Oscar consideration.
