The last thing 2001 needs is a digital transfer. Gorgeous prints exist, whether 35mm or 70mm. This film needs to BREATHE. I would never consider watching a DCP.

Well you're on a digital media enthusiast site. A digital transfer is required to create that media. As for a 4k DCP....its probably inevitable, but 2001 seems to be a staple of 70mm reperatory showings. I imagine it will live on celluloid about as long as anything might.

If this is from a new 4k restoration, presumably the blu-ray will be updated? Unforgiven utilized a new master where Blade Runner didn't?

It would be a big missed opportunity not to take advantage of the original resolution of the film and put a good deal of resources into this, but who knows

If I'm not mistaken, the current master isn't from a 4K scan (while Blade Runner was). So it would be closer to Unforgiven's case than Blade Runner's.

For the first time since the original release, this 70mm print was struck from new printing elements made from the original camera negative. This is a true photochemical film recreation. There are no digital tricks, remastered effects, or revisionist edits. The original version will be presented to recreate the cinematic event audiences experienced 50 years ago. A longtime admirer of the late American auteur, Nolan worked closely with the team at Warner Bros. Pictures throughout the mastering process.
All analog workflow and restoration?

Interesting to note than when WB was preparing for the 70mm release of Interstellar, they provided some theaters with a single reel of 2001 to help projectionists ensure that their equipment was in working order.

I wonder if the new Blu-ray and UHD release will have any digital clean-up done to repair damage sustained by the negative? I saw a newly-struck 70mm print screened in Toronto in 2014 which looked very good, but there was some minor damage that I thought could be fixed quite easily in the digital realm.

On Point podcast from this week about the 50th anniversary. Has anyone heard whether there will be any Cinerama screenings of it this year (Seattle or LA)?

Showtimes for L.A. [click on "See More Dates" for all scheduled dates]. Hopefully they'll add some more dates through the next weekend (leading in to Memorial Day), so I can actually take time off to get down there. So far, only 2 of the screenings are in the actual Cinerama Dome. I would have thought they'd at least screen it daily for a week, as I don't think there's any blockbuster CGI fest out that week.

Agreed! That article told me next to nothing about this restoration (though I'm not knocking Lachino for posting it).
I'm very curious about how these new prints differ from other fairly recently struck 70mm prints.

I’m not knocking Lachino either, I’m knocking The Guardian, a paper that has a long history of terrible film writing and comical lack of understanding of film technology. This one is a classic:

I didn't even need to read the article to know that article was trash. Holy moly that's a nuclear take. Films don't need to be in High Definition? What?!?
Anyway regardless of what the forum may think of Nolan or his films I do trust him to treat these films with care.

The funny thing is that Peter Bradshaw has no clue what high definition actually is and yet decided to write an entire article about it.
