The 15th falls on a Tuesday on average once every seven months, and I can't remember announcements ever being delayed a day specifically because of this.

Moe, maybe CC wants to make the folks over on HTF sweat for one more day.

What are the possible reasons for delaying announcements? Like they haven't finished typing the disc aspects?

Announcing titles requires x amount of work. There is y time remaining in the day to devote to announcing titles. x > y.

I would guess signing off on the designs ends up being the biggest issue in the delay. The specs and release dates are already well planned by announcement time, but I can see Criterion not wanting to release the artwork when they are still tweaking the image.

There have been plenty of times where they've announced the titles without the artwork being ready.

But can't they prepare these things beforehand? Or they don't have enough staff to meet the deadlines?

I never understand delays. Every month has the 15th in it.

Unfortunately, Criterion is not solely in the business of announcing things on their website once a month. Sometimes other things get in the way, like making releases for things that they have previously announced, and getting things lined up to announce in the future.
Also, the 15th is not a "deadline," but more of a tradition.

I'm guessing that getting the actual releases out on time is a higher priority than getting the announcements out on time, so that work towards this end isn't necessarily a top tier activity. Plus, increasingly so over the last few years, they like to roll everything out at once and in a professional manner, and it seems like they lately prefer a delay to an incomplete-at-announcement set of specs on a title.

Somebody should probably go check on Joe Lugoff.

So we're assuming the same people responsible for making the releases are also responsible for putting the information online every month for the announcements? I had no idea Criterion was such a small company.

Well, it's not that big, and uploading the new releases is a one- or two-day-a-month job, so I'm pretty sure those folk have to do something else to justify their paycheck.
And a day here or there really doesn't matter. In the big scheme of things, where on the calendar our couple of days of bitching about cover art falls isn't going to change the fact that we'll all be ignoring these titles after they're actually released!

The good news is they'll be a days shorter wait until next month's releases.

I assumed these would be the guys responsible for Criterion's twitter/website and whatnot. I didn't really think the guys responsible for putting these releases together had to actually upload the information for announcements.

In December, does Criterion announce the March releases and then on New Years release the teaser drawing for the rest of 2014's releases?

I wouldn't necessarily call the New Years Day drawing "the rest of 2014 releases." It is more a look ahead to what is eventually coming with no specific time frame. There are always a handful of hints that get carried over from one year to the next.

And the New Years drawing will probably have clues that are for movies that have already been announced for January and February.

Pure conjecture. They'll come today, unless Criterion is too busy to get them up until Monday. Unless Criterion themselves say "looks like it's going to be Monday," I'd expect them today.
