In the spirit of JLG, even if they don't have the rights, they should release it anyway and see what happens.

I do the same thing about
The Quiet Man. \:D/
Which will never happen, Republic library and all.

Status update:
Telluride off to a great start! No movies yet, but a chance to chat with Olivier Assayas and his DP about shooting film vs Red camera, Bertrand Tavernier about Henry Hathaway, and meeting Errol Morris properly for the first time. Looking forward to a great festival!
Hopefully this means that they've met Morris over the phone, to discuss matters such as a Criterion box of his classic docs that were formerly on IFC/MGM discs.

What Hathaway could Criterion possibly be working on?

It is likely
Peter Ibbetson or
The Lives of a Bengal Lancer. The latter made a strong
impression on a young Tavernier. We know
Design for Living is forthcoming. Criterion could be working on their own Gary Cooper set.

Hathaway may not be in the frame at all: La Princesse de Montpensier, Tavernier's latest and an IFC title, was probably the chief matter discussed between the director and Criterion's representative(s).

Also, Kiss Me Deadly! What are the 4th and the last poster on the second row?

The first one you ask is
A Colt is My Passport, which has already been released through the Eclipse line. I don't know what the one at the end of the second row is.

This is all sort of
old news, though it's nice to see the posters.

The Malick cover aside, is this a Tarkovsky's "Solyaris" on Blu-Ray hint?

Now it reminds me of the poster for The Barbarian Invasions ... except that was an ass crack, not an open book.

Lol. Maybe it is a ass crack. Some designer had some LSD and visioned a big fat person sitting on top of a hill and the troops are trying to attack it.

THE BIG BLUE ASS
Directed by Terence Malick
The photographed landscape not bending with the 'page' does contribute to the illusion of a big ol' crack in the sky.

Mizoguchi's
Life of Oharu has been requested quite a lot recently on the Facebook page, Criterion replied to someones comment about how great a film it was:
Criterion on Facebook wrote:One of the greatest. The issue is not rights — it's film materials. The original negative appears no longer to exist and the best surviving fine grain master we've seen is very, very badly damaged. This needs a full-on film restoration. What source were you were looking at? How was the quality?
Surely Toho must have something better in the vaults?
