Wow. My friend is by far the most enthusiastic, positive person about movies I've ever met, but his tastes make me scratch my head sometimes.

Re: Awards Season 2016
Ali's classy take:
La La Land has done so well, and it's resonated with so many people especially when people need a sense of buoyancy in their life, so that film has really impacted people in a very different way than Moonlight. So when their name was read I wasn't surprised... I was really happy for them. And then when I did see security coming out on stage and their moment was being disrupted in some way, I got really worried. And then when they said "Moonlight," it just threw me a bit... I didn't wanna go up there and take something from somebody. It's very hard to feel joy... But I feel very fortunate for all of us to walk away with the Best Picture award.

Re: Awards Season 2016
Yesterday in the UK, Moonlight was around 5-1 for Best Picture. Part of me thought it would win. This year of all years, in this political climate. I know La La Land had been the massive favourite for ages, but I had a sneaky suspicion. Anyway, I never bet so there you go.
So this year's Awards will be known for Beatty/Dunaway, which is great news for Trump as the political stuff will be forgotten.

Shymalan's tweet tells me that he is either smarter than I think and it was full meta since he is aware how awkward and non-organic all his twists have become OR he actually thinks he is writing good material. Having seen Split, I am inclined to go with the latter.

Awards Season 2016
It will be interesting how the academy and PWC react, I imagine there will be a multi person verification of the handoff back stage in the future, "I am handing you the best actor envelope, please read the category printed on the envelope" "this envelope says best actor" and both parties have a second to witness the handoff and confirm the envelope.
and category printed on the envelope in 200pt typeface.
Then they'll probably have simultaneous opening of the alternate envelope with a stage manager observing the alternate envelope opening and speaking directly to the control room whether or not it is a match and then collect and secure the alternate envelope so that it is no longer with the unannounced envelopes.
And abc will likely require additional cameras whose only job is to catch the envelope category (these would never be show on the air) so the control can verify the envelope visually.
I would guess the breakdown is in communication with the stage manager, accountants and the control room. The control room had to be informed and convinced, then the mistake had to be verified and then a decision had to be made as to how to handle it, which resulted in the stage managers being sent on stage with the correct envelope.
Interestingly, this may impact a lot of behind the scenes changes at the academy, Boone isaacs leadership could be disrupted or ended by an academy board furious at the biggest cock up imaginable, which would squash her diversity initiatives inadvertently.
I could also see any internal academy blowback result in an end to instant run off balloting for best picture and a return to five nominees with a plurality earning a win as moonlight probably only upset la la land because of the Method of how votes are counted, so to some in the academy the way to "fix" the problem is to make sure the old system is reinstated.
But at least this will result In Tons of press coverage and big box office bumps and video sales for both films. Notoriety sells, and moonlight only winning as yet another upset is not nearly as good a narrative to increase a films income as being the center of a three ring circus. Steve Harvey has like fifteen jobs now, instead of two or three. Millions more people will hear of moonlight and watch at least part of it as a result

Was Casey Affleck still in character during his acceptance speech? Or was he actually playing himself in the movie? Now I'm confused!

The simple expedient of printing the Category on the card would have prevented this cockup.
If Beatty had seen a card which read:
Best Actress
Emma Stone -- La La Land
it would have been clear that the card was the wrong one.
Similarly the correct card should have read:
Best Picture
Moonlight
(bunch of producer names)

The category was on the card, albeit in small type at the bottom. It was also on the envelope.Lemmy Caution wrote:The simple expedient of printing the Category on the card would have prevented this cockup.

I was surprised when I learned you could bet on this. Seems a little too secretive a process to allow that. All those people who gambled on La La Land (assuming many people bet on this) must be the truly crushed ones.thirtyframesasecond wrote:Yesterday in the UK, Moonlight was around 5-1 for Best Picture. If it's going to happen Best Picture does seem like the worst possible time/scenario, but I wonder if it would be even more awkward for it to happen during director/acting?
Here's to hoping the NBA Finals are the next public American event to have a surprise ending.

Re: Awards Season 2016
Well, it sort of happened when Frank Lloyd won for Cavalcade - Will Rogers (presumably after opening the envelope) said "Come and get it Frank!", at which point Frank Capra, nominated for Lady For A Day, stood up an started making his way to the podium. It was clarified before getting any further, but still!JohnShade wrote: If it's going to happen Best Picture does seem like the worst possible time/scenario, but I wonder if it would be even more awkward for it to happen during director/acting?
Incidentally, I can't find it on the net (and am at work anyway), but there is a great Mel Smith / Griff Rhys Jones sketch where Smith is an Oscar Nominee who unexpectedly wins and Jones is the presenter - as Smith gives an emotional thank-you speech, Jones realises he's read out the wrong name...

Re: Awards Season 2016
That's the funniest part: out of all the possibilities it happened to Best Picture! The mistake wouldn't even have worked with most other categories, I mean, if Leo got the wrong envelope he wouldn't say "and the oscar for best actress goes to Casey Affleck". Of if any of the other 4 nominated actresses had won, since Emma was the ONLY one in a best picture nominee. What are the odds really? That it has never happened before and then it finally happens in the worst way possible.JohnShade wrote:thirtyframesasecond wrote: If it's going to happen Best Picture does seem like the worst possible time/scenario, but I wonder if it would be even more awkward for it to happen during director/acting?

Re: Awards Season 2016
Stolen from another forum, but imagine if it had been the duplicate Best Actor card, and Dunaway read Manchester by the Sea instead. Then when Kimmel was trying to correct it he would be telling Matt Damon that he hadn't actually won, and it would have seemed like he took his joke way, way too far.felipe wrote:That's the funniest part: out of all the possibilities it happened to Best Picture! Too bad they didn't have the Makeup envelope, so that they could announce SUICIDE SQUAD as Best Picture.
Meanwhile, I know some people were excited when Kimmel was announced as host, but it's hard for me to see what he brought to the table other than his Matt Damon jokes. I know hosts are set up to fail, but I don't remember a host humping one single note that much since Letterman's "Oprah/Uma" bit.

Re: Awards Season 2016
He's safe and bland enough to be host for life, as far as I'm concerned. He doesn't say anything controversial unless the target of the joke is in on it or friendly with him, so there's no chance at the sort of tension that Jon Stewart or Chris Rock created. He's a seasoned emcee, so there's no chance at the sort of awkwardness that Hathaway/Franco created. He's sort of like someone created an Oscar host in a lab, minus the singing and dancing. As long as he isn't trying to tell the celebs that he ate their Halloween candy next year.Brian C wrote:Meanwhile, I know some people were excited when Kimmel was announced as host, but it's hard for me to see what he brought to the table other than his Matt Damon jokes. Watching it back, it seemed amazing that the producers of La La Land were allowed to speak for so long before being interrupted and told that Moonlight won.

It seems clear that Beatty knew something was slightly wrong, but it was a big moment on live tv and probably too awkward to shift or get another envelope (which he should have done in hindsight? it's a hindsight situation). I just hope this doesn't mean the Shampoo Criterion blu ray is delayed.
