It’s amazing how less than 5 seconds of screen time has been so problematic all these years later. Most 35mm prints that still screen in North America are the cut version

Eh, it would be nice if they had both, but the cut version was the original US theatrical version, so I don't care much. The digital masking in Mullholland Dr was actually only added for video release, but remains the official version in perpetuity. The real selling point here will be a new clean 4K transfer.

I would fully expect the Criterion will feature the substantial bonus footage for WIld at Heart though.

Are we talking about the scene where Bobby Peru blasts his own head off and Lynch masked it with smoke to secure the R rating? I don't recall the European versions featuring the unmasked shot either.

The torture of Johnnie Farragut was longer but that was already trimmed after test audiences walked out.

Yeah, that is it. I guess the original European theatrical release was unmasked...but it has apparently since been replaced by the US release for video and subsequent theatrical tours. I guess the new Shout Factory release had it as an extra. It was done by Lynch himself, and it's really much ado about nothing and the film is still filled with plenty of absurd violence to satisfy the bloodlust.

Do we think it’s true about Demme’s Beloved?

It needs something bad, it’s only ever been released on DVD back in its early days, and they did not seem to really care about its presentation even then.

If this is a baseless rumor, it’s not a nice one, because this and Todd Field’s Little Children are two gems that have been stuck in this DVD hell.

You might not, but for pretty much the rest of the world, we had the uncensored version, including home video, until the DVD era when Hollywood studios started spreading MPAA-neutered masters outside North America. For this and a number of other films. Watching Wild at Heart with that fake smoke at the end completely mutes & ruins the impact of Bobby Peru’s final scene. It’s like a parent suddenly walking in on you, and telling you to turn the sound down.

Here’s hoping, much like A Nightmare on Elm Street’s 1 & 5, we finally get an uncensored version again.

It would be nice, but as a Disney title, Beloved is unlikely

Mubi has a 4k of The Secret Agent coming in September, so I wouldn’t be surprised to see Criterion announce their own versions this month. It’s past due, anyway.

The real selling point for me will be if they can include INDUSTRIAL SYMPHONY NO. 1.

Would love it if they restore the deleted scenes as well, they’re terrific.

It’s amazing how Fire Walk With Me: The Missing Pieces now has a DCP. I would love to see the Wild at Heart scenes from the Lime Green box get restored in 4K

Alright, fair enough, I endorse your impassioned plea.

The other remaining thing that would be nice to have is the rest of the Twin Peaks Season 3 episodes in 4K. I don't think they're going to do another rebuild of the first two seasons to try to get past 2K (other than the pilot), especially because the theatrical screenings going around of that are the 2Ks.

And yes, the deleted scenes getting an upgrade would be very welcome.

With all this wishlisting, given the Barry Gifford connection, it’d be great, however unlikely it is, to see the episodes of Hotel Room included, too.

What happened with that and On the Air? I can't even remember them anymore, but they were pretty unremarkable/poor? Would like to revisit.
I have Industrial Symphony on laserdisc, but would be great to have that on a modern format....and that is just SD video right? So would be a pretty easy one to just tack on without much expectations for improvement.

UCLA a year ago had an evening of On the Air restorations, but I think it was mostly a new transfer done off a broadcast tape. I'm not sure what the source material for the show is as it's clearly shot on 35mm, but post-production seems to have been done on video. It was also a free screening, which has me suspect there's maybe rights issues involved. I loved it very much and think it deserves to be seen again.

Regarding Hotel Room, it is odd how so many original HBO productions aren’t on HBO Max. Michael Ritchie’s incredible The Positively True Adventures of the Alleged Texas Cheerleader Murdering-Mom (1993) isn’t there, but there are standard def clips of it in a documentary about the incidents that inspired it.

It's possible HBO has no rights to On the Air and Hotel Room—both series (along with American Chronicles) were part of the deal that Lynch/Frost made with WorldVision on Twin Peaks, in which case they might be with Paramount via CBS.

No idea where Dawn of the Discs is getting this from (god knows they’re unreliable) but they say Criterion’s done a 4K restoration of the Isaac Mizrahi documentary Unzipped. Given how much she’s talked it up on her Letterboxd and elsewhere, this seems a no-brainer for a Charli xcx special feature of some kind.

I'd be surprised. It's really not that good, but I suppose it is a time capsule of the mid-90s. Mizrahi's autobiography is really good (up until the point where it becomes an exercise in name-dropping), so it could be nice to see some extensive new retrospective interviews with him and the models.

Surprised at this revelation.

Yes, a 90s time-capsule, but also a distillation of the delightful absurdity of the "creative" process when money and celebrity are no objects. [Oh! Maybe that's a tautology. 90s time-capsule = distillation of absurdity. Nevertheless ...] Every scene, iyam, is engaging and most are hilarious. Paula Heredia's cutting and Ellen Kuras' camerawork are super-efficient and super-dynamic.

If Criterion is going to help save old quality tv shows from falling into oblivion, I would love to seem them raid PBS' vaults before the attempts to completely destroy/privatize it are completely successful. As far as I know, I'll Fly Away has never been released on disc, a crime against US television broadcast history if there ever was one. Then there's the short-lived weekly 30 min. sketch series Trying Times that featured a new director (Johnathan Demme, Christopher Guest, Alan Arkin, Buck Henry, Michael Lindsay-Hogg...) and cast (Catherine O'Hara, Candace Bergen, Teri Garr, Spalding Gray, Steven Wright, Carrie Fisher, David Byrne, Gena Davis...) each week that unfortunately didn't get picked up by all affiliates and disappeared just as fast as it started. Then of course there's also all PBS' documentary work over the decades starting with the monumental An American Family series.

Another priority should be rescuing all the wonderful filmed plays from American television's early days & resurrecting/upgrading The Golden Age Of Television box.
