His influence went beyond Doctor Who - he wrote episodes of several TV series (as widely apart as The Avengers and Crossroads), and was script editor on the BBC Classic Serials during the 1980s, two favourites of mine being an extremely faithful The Hound of the Baskervilles with Tom Baker as Holmes and a great adaptation of The Invisible Man.

His Who novelisations though were surely his most influential. Before VHS and DVD releases, in the UK at least if you wanted to know what an old story was, you had to read the book as they were very rarely repeated. I probably read more books by him than other writer as a kid, and he influenced a generation of British SF writers. His influence is even felt in post 2005 Who - Peter Capaldi's final goodbye speech owes much to Dicks' conception of the Doctor (indeed the character arc of his Doctor can be argued as learning to be Dicks' Doctor).

I don’t have much experience with Mr. Frank’s work but I can attest to Candy Mountain being a great film. I found it on VHS in a thrift store and took the 99¢ plunge. And what I got wound up becoming a dear personal favorite; a beautifully made, sweet little treat of a film. I wish it could find its way to disc and reach a wider audience.

Me neither. Most A or B-level rockers circa 1978 (when the Cars' debut was released) were well past their best years by the time they hit 34 (Ocasek's age at the time).
