Probably a blu upgrade announcement next week, they also linked the AV Club's top five de Palmas.

And ironically didn't include it on the list.

All the same, thrilled to go from a single layer DVD to a dual layer Blu-ray.

Because they can't release any Hitchcock at the moment. \:D/

Criterion in response to a guy on Facebook asking if Criterion's recent trend towards contemporary films and Blu upgrades is how it's going to be from now on.....

(posting this here rather that on the Facebook thread as it's related to what some of us were saying after last months announcements)
Criterion wrote:@Greg - lots of classic and foreign-language stuff coming up, don't worry. Blu-ray upgrades and newer films are easier to keep on schedule than new classic restorations, because there aren't nearly as many potential sticking points (unexpected problems with film elements, version controversies, new discoveries we decide are worth the wait). Occasionally a bunch of things slip at once, and we are left with a month or two with a disproportionate number of contemporary films and Blu-ray upgrades. But the reason things slip is almost always that we chose to spend even more time on the restoration or to wait for an important supplement, so it's a trade-off. In the end, we hope you'll be happy with a better edition a month or two later, but we definitely aren't backing off of the older and foreign films. You'll see.

Betting this is a reference to Red River.

It was me who asked that question (I made a FB account just to ask them things like this, and it got through).

I don't want to put things together, but I have been requesting Rivette alot on there (and Criterion says they read everything on there), so when they said "you'll see" like it is going to make me happy, I wonder if that means Rivette is finally coming soon. Long shot, but look out (though I also have been requesting The Last Movie, and I know that isn't coming anytime soon from anybody, so take it for what it's worth.).

In case you weren't aware, they have stated in the past something to the effect of "Out 1 is coming but probably won't be our first Rivette."

yeah, I knew about that, but since that "prob won't be our 1st" comment was made, makes me think one might come soon, so I have just been a supporter of it in the middle of the Spielberg and Fantastic Mr Fox requests that flood that facebook (which is also one reason I even asked that question to them yesterday that they answered nicely.). Out 1 might take a while, so which Rivettes do you see they might be able to release? I'm thinking the obvious Celine and Julie Go Boating. It would be a great release next to Godard's Weekend one month (Juliet Berto/New Yorker titles).

Hasn't Criterion been sitting on Paris Belongs to Us for years? That's my guess for their first Rivette release, anyway.

The most likely candidates are:

Paris Belongs to Us (Janus)
Fool's Mate - short (Janus)
Pont du Nord (The Film Desk)
Celine & Julie Go Boating (New Yorker)
La Belle Noiseuse (New Yorker)

All of these have decent prints available and would presumedly not warrant a major technical investment.

I don't recall how the New Yorker sale panned out. Did some of the catalogue really end up in Criterion's hands?

The Harvey Milk documentary is a former New Yorker property.

Hence it will surely be the first Rivette they release. (See also: Oshima.)

June 2011 Predictions:

Black Moon (Malle)
A Brighter Summer Day (Yang)
M. Hulot’s Holiday (Tati)
Kiss Me Deadly (Aldrich)
Hiroshima Mon Amour (Resnais) (I’m going to keep predicting this until it becomes reality. Please Criterion, while he's alive)

Life During Wartime
Happiness
Jour de fete
Parade
Eclipse: Emilio Fernández

Blu-upgrades of...

M. Hulot's Holiday (this is overdue by now conisdering how long ago the theatrical tour wrapped up)
Pandora's Box (new restoration last year and all...)

My guesses:

New titles:
Y Tu Mama Tambien
Black Moon
Emigrants/New Land set
Emilio Fernandez eclipse

bluray upgrades:
Sisters
a random 300-399 spine (let's go with Fists in the Pocket)
Beauty and the Beast

I'd really love to guess a Hitchcock month with Foreign Correspondent getting a spine, Lady Vanishes and 39 steps getting bluray upgrades. But I feel if we were getting a Hitchcock month, we'd get hints just before the announcement. Maybe july.
