God, enough Jarmusch in the CC already. There's three films too many of his in the collection as it is and if Coffee and Cigarettes somehow finds itself a spine # I might actually write in and complain; same goes for Limits of Control. Even though I think Chocolat may be one Denis' lesser films, the fact none of her films have found their way in the Criterion criterion and FOUR of Jarmusch's has is mind-boggling. The two couldn't be more pronouncedly different on the whole "form/content" spectrum ...as in Denis is a genius and Jarmusch, well, kind of sucks.

haha, I kind of deserved that. But honestly, do we really need a new Jarmusch release ever 12-15 months? It's like they have some sort of secret agreement or something; like that Sons of Lee Marvin club.

We technically don't need them to do anything at all, but insofar as they like Jim Jarmusch's movies, I assume they'll continue to release them without caring whether or not Mr. Ned approves.

Why is it that, even at this late date in DVD history, people still pretend that they don't know how licensing works, and insist on treating Criterion like some sort of omnipotent Hall of Fame committee?

Please see my thread on Jarmusch in under the "Infighting and Navel Gazing" section if you want to know the reason.

I find the Casa de lava speculation strange. It's reported that Bankole had a less than stellar time making the film, with he and Costa even getting into a physical altercation half-way through the shoot. Unless he now feels differently about it, I'm having a hard time imagining Bankole contributing to special features for its DVD.

It's been worse. When
Monsoon Wedding was announced, I recall some crying of "I can't believe Mira Nair is in the Collection before Satyajit Ray!" as if Criterion had some sort of racial quota they needed to fill.

So who are these American DVD companies tying up the rights to every single Satyajit Ray film? Because I'd love to buy those discs.

Eh, I'm content with the AE discs. Though at this rate they'll cover everything by 2030.

Sony Pictures Classics held the rights to :
Pather Panchali
Aparijito
The Music Room
The World of Apu
The Goddess
Three Daughters
The Big City
The Lonely Wife
The Middleman
They released the Apu trilogy, which presumably didn't sell well since nothing else was released. The SPC Apu discs have been out of print for some time. Criterion could or maybe have picked up these titles in the last year or so.

Didn't Sony's Ray rights lapse years ago? They've just been sitting there, all nicely restored, at the Academy since then. Criterion have got a direct line to them via Merchant-Ivory, so I don't think we can attribute their continued non-appearance simply to an impossible licensing situation, as implied above.

Criterion posted this picture on Facebook, obviously in response to recent allegations that they don't feed their staff:
If by the end of the day, there aren't at least twenty completely random guesses as to some future release that this is alluding to, I will be extremely disappointed.

I'm more concerned that there is some sort of square donut fad that I wasn't previously made aware of.

Actually, the (serious) speculation has been pretty uniform, and that is some kind of Twin Peaks related release, most likely "Fire Walk With Me," with a few of us holding out hope of a possible Twin Peaks series release...which you have to admit would be a perfect first foray into television series for CC (if we are to exclude the Golden Age of Television collection, many of which were later adapted to features, and the Bergman films which he made for TV, but later got theatrical releases).

The Twin Peaks Gold Box Set is a pretty stellar and recent release, so I don't see the point of Criterion double-dipping. With that said, let's all form a united front and cross our fingers en masse in hopes of a
FWWM Criterion.

And Tanner '88, which is straightforwardly a TV series

Agreed. That's pretty messed up.

Curiously, whats the donuts/'Twin Peaks' connection?
I had a feeling that was stretching it. Criterion themselves, on the photo: "Sometimes a donut is just a donut."

Yeah, but this is like fifty donuts. At least one of them has to be a clue!
