Criterion just has to put out a Mizoguchi title on Blu-ray eventually, right? I'm going to guess that either Sansho or Ugetsu receives an upgrade in June.

Since I heard Alambrista! was suppose to get a Criterion release, I've been waiting patiently. I've only seen Robert M. Young's excellent TV movie J.T. and one of the best prison films of all time, Short Eyes, so this one particularly piqued my interest, especially having grown up and still living in north-east Los Angeles where practically everyone's parents were illegal at some point (mine included). Well, I did some Googling and found an illustrator who credits himself with work done for the Criterion Collection. Here is the "CD cover":

Can we expect this for June?

Confirmed.

Black Moon and Insignificance show up on their respective directors' Explore pages, too.

Insignificance
Black Moon
Makioka Sisters

Aha! Who says Criterion doesn't do themed months? It is clearly Eighth-Best Films of Major Directors Month.

With all due respect -- I suspect there are a lot more than seven better Ichikawa films than Makioka Sisters (which resembles a slightly subpar Masterpiece Theatre series -- but with much worse background music).

Isn't Sisters pretty much a given for an upgrade as well.

I was being kind. There are at least 15 Malle films better than Black Moon too.

How about "Look, we had to take these because they were included as part of the package we bought." Month?

Malle. It was a joke since I obviously don't talk to everyone at Criterion. Isn't he only behind Kurosawa, Bergman and Ozu in titles from them?

Month is saved. Clearly the red-circled date on the calendar on the New Year's clue referred to Le Cercle Rouge and this film, not Sunday Bloody Sunday.
