I'd see a double feature of Salo and Jackass. Someday I'll get my wish....

Then you might want to track some down before venturing into SALO.

My guesses:

Nov: LA JOUR SE LEVE, TWO-LANE BLACKTOP and a couple of off-the-radar-screen items. Something like Truffaut's THE LAST METRO, or tiles we haven't heard about in a while, like HUMANITY AND PAPER BALLOONS or THE ONLY SON.

Dec: BERLIN ALEXANDERPLATZ and a boxed set, possibly Ophuls.

If they're not having production problems... I speculate that Berlin Alexanderplatz will be a November release. ([December is a bit late to take advantage of the full holiday buying season... and Fanny And Alexander, for example, was a November release]. And it's on for October in the UK.) Gotta be November.

I agree, that's a possibility. The OPHULS box may be an early 08.

Anytime anyone says late one year or early the next I always assume the later date. I'd expect the Ophuls box and the Human Condition trilogy next year, unless by some miracle they finish early. Sawdust and Tinsel is also a good possibility, since it's been in the works for a bit and was confirmed as upcoming. Berlin Alexanderplatz also seems most likely for November.

I don't know about Sawdust and Tinsel. I was under the assumption that the film in general needed a lot more restoration.

I had a dream last night that Criterion was going to release Siegel's Invasion of the Body Snatcher next month. I don't know why, but I have the feeling is actually happening.

I'm a sucker for the original Siegel directed IotBS. It's such a strange, paranoid film (with some great camera work) that I truly admire it.

maybe not "release of the year", per se (that'd probably be Stranger Than Paradise/Permanent Vacation or Ivan's Childhood, for me) but it'd be a damn fine release!

I would actually love to see a Siegel set, much like the Fuller, but I don't think his films are available for that. Maybe I'm wrong.

So Houston is having an Antonioni retrospective and by looking at these films it would be really cool to have an Early Antonioni set with his short films and first features.

La signora senza camelie and I Vinti are the only early features not already spoken for in the US, but those two plus a disc of shorts would be most welcome.

I was hoping for some announcements today. They seem to come on either Mondays or Fridays. Oh well.

the general rule of thumb is that it'll be the Friday after the 15th, unless the 15th is shortly after a Friday, in which case it will BE the 15th. I'd count on midday Friday, with Wednesday and Thursday as somewhat unlikely possibilities.

You can try contacting the Gene Siskel Film Center who had an Antonioni retrospective in Chicago in June and July. I would guess that the majority of the prints are from overseas (with a few exceptions). Here is the list of special thanks:

Antonioni was organized by Cinecittà Holding and is sponsored by the Istituto Italiano di Cultura, Chicago. In the U.S., Kino has a 35mm print of Il Grido. Janus has the U.S. distribution rights to a lot of Antonioni's films, but the only print they possess is a 16mm print of L'Avventura (!). I would imagine that The Passenger came from Sony and Zabriskie Point from Warners. The rest undoubtedly came from Italy (who, according to everyone I know in the theatrical business, are a pain in the ass to work with).

With Melville's last film Un Flic being out of print in R1, does anyone know if a Criterion-release could be in the future?

Is always a possibility that Criterion might release it in the future, but the AB was pretty good image wise; no extras, just a trailer.

Studio Canal holds the rights. A Criterion release seems well within the realm of possibility.

Will Warner now expedite Zabriskie Point?
