Dammit, I hope this isn't in place of the 50% sale, which has come in September or October...

I would be surprised if that was the case. This sale is for 20 measly titles.

Criterion titles are also 40% off in the TCM Shop, plus an additional 15% discount with promo code LABORDAY18.

For the last two years the 50% off sale has been in late October, so here's hoping this mini-sale is far enough removed that the former won't be affected.

Gonna have to walk into a B&N to pick up the Bergman set anyway

50% off sales also, if I remember correctly, revolve around a major release, and the most major release of October is The Princess Bride. So the sale might be all the way in October 30. Or it could be much earlier, in September, which it sometimes is, again if I recall correctly.

Sept 25th would fit the bill

Sure. I just worry because when I went to pick up Von Sternberg/Dietrich from B&N during the last sale, they were all spider-wrapped and badly dented. I worry the same will happen for the Bergman set.

Huh, my store doesn't use those things. Only problem is they keep the boxsets behind the counter, which makes looking over them all for damage super awkward. Luckily the Sternberg+Dietrich set the lady handed me first was in perfect condition.

Yeah, my BN keeps their boxed sets on a bookshelf behind the counter. They're visible, at least. That said, I think y'all are dreaming that the stores will carry enough Bergman sets to pick one up in store. I imagine these will come in their own outer cardboard packaging like Fox's Ford and Murnau sets, so it'll prob be fine to have it shipped from anyone

For the Olympic set, some were shipped with the outer cardboard box left intact, others were shipped with it removed (assuming they all had them to start with).

My store keeps them behind the counter too but also spider-wrapped. Granted, there's never anyone minding the movies/music part of the store so I usually just help myself to peruse anything behind the counter, and go through boxes of recent shipments of Criterions sitting opened and unguarded on or behind the counter. No one's ever yelled at me but I always feel a little sneaky.

Both the stores where I shop stopped staffing the media department about a year ago. When I went in for this past summer's sale, they'd also turned off the security beepers, which I took as a tacit admission that they aren't going to return to staffing any time soon.

Looks like we're waiting until October.

We haven't had a flash sale in September since the delay for the corrected Eraserhead disc.

I think 2012 was the last Sept flash sale, but was hoping this was the year for another. Oh well.

The next flash sale will be the first on the new site. Fingers crossed. Maybe that’s why they ran the mini labor day sale as a test run.

October 16 might make some sense. Shampoo isn't the biggest title of the month (The Princess Bride obviously is, but 10/30 is a bit too close to the B&N sale), but coming the day after January announcements (which could include some highlights, last year had The Breakfast Club) would probably be a good substitute.

If Criterion does give us another flash sale in conjunction for Princess Bride's release on Oct.30, I imagine that Criterion could market it as a Halloween sale. The code could be "mask." (men in masks cannot be trusted... except those at Criterion giving a 50% sale).

Well, not this week. Have they ever done a sale not on a Tuesday?

The last time was Monday, October 17, 2016 (so it ended on a Tuesday rather than beginning on one).

I may be reading too much into this, maybe the sale will be tomorrow. When you go to the Criterion Website the The Store is the first page that comes up. I don't really remember seeing that before. Plus, they usually have the new releases on release day as the feature page on the site.

I was skeptical that it would have been today, until I got the $10 gift code for being a long-term Filmstruck subscriber just before noon ET. But my hopes were quickly dashed.
