Will this be a new spines-only month or can we still expect Sisters' upgrade?

Same here, although Black Moon sounds interesting (a talking unicorn!)

I'm pretty happy if this lineup holds, and this will be the first month this year that I'm looking at more than one purchase. Most of the titles mentioned are going to be first time viewings, and although I understand we are looking at lower tier Kon Ichikawa and disputedly turning point Roeg, I'm thrilled to be able to pick these up none-the-less [I've purposefully held off seeing Insignificance since I first heard it announced as a collection contender, so this is especially welcome].

Although I love the film, I'm happy with the BFI's People on Sunday and the Optimum releases of Black Moon & Zazie dans la Metro will do for me, but I'm especially looking forward to picking up Kiss Me Deadly. I only know as much as I've read about Aldrich through Alex Cox's infectious enthusiasm for his work in his Moviedrome catalogues [Aldrich's films appeared more often throughout Cox's two series than any other director, and I would imagine he would be thrilled to write a piece for this release into the collection] but just had that 'where to start' problem up until now, so I guess this is a nice way to begin.

Dreading Zazie in 1.66 when it's undeniably an academy frame

I believe that the Janus print I saw was 1.66, so I'm expecting this release will be too. What makes you think Academy, Domino? Does it just look appreciably better that way, or seem too tight at 1.66? Academy for a French film in 1960 would be pretty unusual, right?

Not at all Jeff. Look at Band of Outsiders made several years later for example.

*Criterion investigates Zazie during production, discovers a note from Malle or Raichi saying: "this is to be shown in 1.66:1 for the love of God never ever ever never show it in 1.33:1!"*

*Criterion forum responds: "Well that doesn't prove anything, Malle/Raichi may have been forced at gunpoint by the studio to write it, I think they're saying that it is supposed to be 1.33:1--which is how I prefer it--you just need to read between the lines to understand what the note is really saying... or be a time-traveling mind reader."

The Optimum "Zazie" is Academy and it looks perfect to me. I never knew that it was ever shown any other way.

That's their way of saying they couldn't find one good thing about this release.

Don't listen to the snarks. It's not major Ichikawa but it's a lovely film.

Is it really that bad? I've loved the Ichikawa I've seen, and it sounds like a reasonably interesting Ozu-esque kind of plot.

Yeah, Zazie turned out to be a non-issue. That means I probably misremembered the Janus print being 1.66 -- or maybe that they've changed their minds.
