I'll balance it out for you by posting Blu-ray announcements in that thread. Problem solved.

It is incredible to me that no matter what I retitle these threads, people keep coming in here to post about DVDs.
DVD WB's downgrading from pressed disc no less.

That's why the Popeye disc is so nice -- a lovely (pressed, I think) Blu-Ray.

Michael, I’m torn about getting that set. As someone who grew up watching Popeye after school it is very tempting.

Technical quality-wise -- unrecognizable from what I watched long ago on (b&w) TV... I bought it, in part, to"reward" Warner for actually doing something right...

Literally the only reason not to get it is money.

Even if you hate Popeye but like other classic cartoons you should still buy it because they've said that if this doesn't sell well they're done with all of them

I believe every DVD copy has rot issues, so that’s good, but we should get the upgrade for free
EDIT wait, this already came out on Blu-ray six years ago?

This is another one that's getting the Meet Me in St. Louis treatment, going from digibook to standard case in the Archive (albeit this time with the same cover art).

Where are you seeing a Blu-ray release of this?
My sincerest of apologies - especially since I'd love to see Straight No Chaser on blu! - I'm so used to seeing Archive discussion in only this thread. Thank you chris for the head's up on the right thread to post.

I just noticed that the "Man From Atlantis" BD announcement says it's from a "NEW 2019 1080p HD MASTER," which seems like it makes the "archivist's orders" hypothesis about WAC's release schedule a little less feasible, since those TV movies had a DVD release in 2011 (and I assume that was the first, not a rerelease)... I guess someone thought timing a release at the same time as the Aquaman disc might generate nostalgia for it?

It's absolutely a thematic tie-in to the Aquaman home video release.

I hope someone remakes a good film soon so we can get the original let out of the vaults, then

I'm still mad that WB didn't do a Blu of the Lynda Carter Wonder Woman series when they had their best chance for a tie-in.

For what it's worth, in the latest Warner Archive podcast Feltenstein mentions they are working on blu-ray releases of at least one oft requested title each from the 30s and 40s, and a three-strip Technicolor MGM musical. The podcast before that he notes they are well aware of the demand for the top silent MGM films (Greed, The Crowd, The Wind, etc.) and that they definitely want to see them released, too.

Let the guessing begin. 1930- Angels with Dirty Faces, 1940- Gaslight
Musical- one of these two... The Harvey Girls or The Ziefield Follies

They "want" to see them released sounds like "your guess is as good as mine."

Especially since Warner indicated that to Kevin Brownlow at least a decade ago!

I know that Christopher Nolan wants Greed released because he mentions it would be in his top ten
here...if Criterion ever puts it out.

At least Greed can be purchased digitally. I had to buy a VHS copy of The Wind a couple of years ago in order to revisit it. Warner has been talking about "restoring" these titles since what, 2004? I remember asking about them at one of those old HTF chats.

From the 2006 Warner chat with Feltenstein and two other Warner reps (and this was not the first such occurrence):
Q: Warner continues to sit on a unrivaled cache of silent masterpieces which are begging for release. Examples would include von Stroheim's GREED (which made a respectable showing--9th--in DVD Decision 2004 [online poll/promotion] and is currently the top vote-getter in TCM's poll of "most requested films not on DVD"), Victor Seastrom's THE WIND and THE SCARLET LETTER, King Vidor's THE BIG PARADE (restored in 2004), THE CROWD, and SHOW PEOPLE
Warner: Every one of the films you mentioned will be released either at the end of this year or during 2007. We recognize their importance and are certainly doing more with our silent films than any other major studio. We have 6600 films in our library and only so many release slots per year, so bear with us.
Bear with us as we wait until hell freezes over before doing anything more with these films, leading you on with false promises and lip service about the "importance" of silent films while our Blu releases generally suggest that cinema didn't
really get going until the 1950s. Now go buy our Blu-ray of relatively unfamiliar Popeye shorts because if we're not impressed enough with sales on that one title (through WBShop only—other retailers don't count), then we're done releasing classic animation forever!

^ The only consolation is that if Warner had released the major MGM silents in 2006-7 our DVDs would probably have rotted by now! Over 50% of my factory-pressed Warner DVDs manufactured in 2006-8 are now partially or wholly unplayable - and (as widely reported on this and other forums) the failure rate for some collectors is even higher!
