Yeah. She seems, from what we see in this (after all, quite short) video to be engaged enough to appreciate the stuff, but not so engaged that she would already have any of it, or have seen most of it. I teach at a university, and most twenty-something women are at least this flighty, but also have never seen a black and white or forigen film, and have never heard of criterion. As a geeky guy, I'm glad to see people who are neither male nor particularly geeky getting excited about good movies.

The Facebook guess that it is Columba Domínguez in Pueblerina seems most likely to me. Perhaps an Emilio Fernández Eclipse set of La Perla, Río Escondido, Maclovia, Pueblerina, and La Malquerida?

South American cinema? Oh my yes. Now all we need is that African cinema eclipse and I'm happy for the year.

Most people here will know Emilio Fernandez as General Mapache in The Wild Bunch and as El Hefe, the man who gives the titular order to "Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Garcia."

Pueblerina seems like a good guess, and an Emilio Fernandez Eclipse set would be most welcome, but a broken YouTube link seems to suggest that Lionsgate owns Pueblerina, or at least that Lionsgate thinks they do. Click here and then try selecting any of the Pueblerina segments.

Indeed, it's kind of astonishing how butthurt some people have got over it. Some red faces on this forum and on the Facebook page I feel. Talk about being trolled.

Yes, Lionsgate released Pueblerina on one of their "Nuestro Cine Clasico" double features (other titles in that line included Fernandez's La Perla and Buñel's Nazarin). There has always been something kind of hinky about that whole line, as it seems even more half-assed than Lionsgate's usual efforts and includes no English subtitles. I wouldn't be surprised if Lionsgate's rights were somewhat limited and Janus has secured something more substantial, but I'm just guessing.

Any reason you name those titles in particular, Jeff? I'd like to know more about the rights situation, but if at all possible, I'd like to see Criterion release one or two of his films from earlier in the 1940s -- especially, especially Maria Candelaria, which established Fernandez's international reputation and is one of the very most significant Mexican films of the "golden age."

Not really. I picked them because of the presumptive inclusion of Pueblerina. The other titles I listed are generally acclaimed, of the same period (1947-1949), and all of them feature Columba Domínguez, so they seemed like they'd make a nifty box. I agree that the earlier Dolores del Río films would certainly be welcome too. It was just a shot in the dark.

María Candelaria would make a fine main-line release with supplements.

So you're concern trolling about the Internet trolling?

Yes! But I gave up hope on that years ago <sob>. And speaking of milestones of Latin American cinema, It's been over a year since I got anxious about what's going on with Limite. The Mexican Buñuels have been filled in a bit over the past few years, and Mr Bongo have achieved wider distribution for some already-accessible films, but the broader picture hasn't changed much in a long time. I'm ready and wiling to praise Criterion for helping to correct this.

And don't forget the rumors of a Roberto Gavaldón Eclipse boxset from a few years back... still waiting on that.

I had forgotten. Refreshing my memory via a forum search, it looks like the same covert Criterion contact also "confirmed" at the same time (2 1/2 years ago) that the Pedro Costa set would also be on Eclipse, so I'd say all bets are off but would love to be proven wrong (especially if the set were to include Macario), which I'd assume it would.

Bad news, Gregory. Criterion commented on the picture again, "Right genre, wrong country."

Really? I thought it looked exactly like Columba Domínguez in Pueblerina, though I haven't seen that film in quite some time.

Wow this is really a surprise to me too. I thought it was Pueblerina. I'm excited to know what it is.
