I really don't mind the blu-ray packaging. I mean, I want my DVDs packaged safely and want the cover looking good all the time, something the plastic helps do. I prefer a rather uniform look too...

Pretty much the same here, particularly when there's no real reason that this couldn't fit in a regular (blu-ray sized) keepcase. (Just like "Spirit Of The Beehive" a while ago could have easily been keepcased.)

Pardon me if this is bleedingly obvious to everybody else, but if the Bluray packaging is smaller than the regular DVD packaging, and it contains the booklet, does this mean that the Bluray booklets are slightly scaled-down versions of the regular DVD booklets? Because that sounds like an insane production decision - surely not?

Geez, who was in charge of picking the images for Essential Art House titles? If they wanted to make the films less compelling for the average viewer, then they have succeeded.

The cover art for The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp looks like a still from Sweet Movie

I was reminded of Martin Sheen at the climax of Apocalypse Now.

When we're talking "average viewer", I think having ART HOUSE in all caps on the cover succeeds well enough on its own.

" . . . This is the end . . . beautiful friend . . . "

And why does La Strada not have Anthony Quinn on the cover? The cover is just a seemingly random medium shot of Giulietta Masina holding her drums?

The product page for the Essential Art House box set contains potential cover art for almost all 50 titles.

I hope this doesn't mean that the only way we'll see Criterion release Le Jour se leve is in one of the Essential Art House Volumes. On the other hand, it would be nice to have it available, though it certainly deserves a full-fledged release.

No kidding. My gut reaction when seeing this image was "wow, they're finally giving this a proper release." My next thought was "oh, wait a minute..."

Nah, it will get a spine number just like Miss Julie did.

Isn't it just the same kind of case as the La Ronde?

I'll take anything at this point. What's the hold up on this anyway?

The Optimum R2 disc is great - no need to wait for Criterion.

A surprising number of these stills make for better covers than the art on the acutal Criterion releases do. Pépé le Moko more than most, obviously. I especially like the use of the iconic images from The Seventh Seal and Jules and Jim that Janus previously (and wisely) used for the 50th anniversary posters.

The idea of someone buying Haxan without being able to hear Casper T's voices on the commentary track saddens me greatly

In light of all of the complaints about image flipping on the Criterion DVD, I assumed you were joking, Antoine. But looking at it a second time, I think that cover image is acutally flipped! Unless I am remembering something incorrectly and Catherine crosses positions with Jules and Jim during their race, it seems that the cover does indeed flip the image.

Yes, the image is flipped, as well as the one on The Seventh Seal. They are also both flipped on the Janus posters.

Criterion Blu-ray packaging

Criterion Blu-ray packaging

Initial opinions from those who have seen it?

I think it's heinous...they look like Warner's book packages, which are pretty cool, but Criterion muffed them up by making them fold-outs, so on the shelf, each title's spine sits crooked. Say hello to the appearance of your new Criterion blu-ray shelf:

Picky packaging nuts are in for some frustration. What are the chances Criterion will hear us and fix this? After all, Warner did fix the snapper case debacle back in 2001.
