Last I heard WB pushed the Se7en 4K release date to next year

You'd think that Barry Lyndon warrants a 4K upgrade. Hopefully WB lets them do it.

Random bit of info I guess, but I was looking through some data and found it interesting that out of the studios Warner Bros. (who at one point had a strict no-licensing policy) has licensed the most titles to Criterion: They've licensed
72 films to them. Sony is next at 64, Toho at 62 (the Godzilla, Zatoichi, and Lone Wolf films helped pump up those numbers).

I wonder if Criterion would do an Errol Flynn collection. Including Captain Blood, there's about a half dozen generally well liked films in the actor's oeuvre without home releases.

That would be great, but Criterion doesn’t really approach studio era films from the notion of stars being auteurs, so I wouldn’t bet on it

While that's true, a fair number of the Flynn films I mentioned (including Captain Blood) are directed by Michael Curtiz, a director that Criterion has touched twice before, and there is precedence for Criterion pairing directors and actors (Sternberg and Dietrich). It's a long shot, but there is something of a precedence, and I don't think that such a set is entirely out of order and would certainly push a few copies.

Technically 73 if you include
Shaft's Big Score!

With Performance, we now can stop considering Warner Archive Blu releases off limits (presumably true for other boutique labels working with Warners too)

as I noted in the other thread, I really, really hope we see
Bad Day at Black Rock on 4K with both commentaries, and this announcement (even though I really do not like Roeg) gives me hope that one day will happen

I'd love to see Criterion license Lubitsch's Merry Widow, personally. Has that one been restored recently?

Demon Seed and Performance in the same month would’ve been cool

I wonder if with Eyes Wide Shut coming soon, and Risky Business already out, if more of Tom Cruise’s movies with the studio are on the table now. He’s had a solid working relationship with them on some more unconventionally commercial work, at least compared to what he was doing with Paramount. The Last Samurai, Interview With a Vampire and Magnolia haven’t gotten a whole lot of love from WB since DVD either.

Magnolia, considering it’s a Paul Thomas Anderson film, is most likely, from that sample, to land with Criterion.

The Last Samurai will probably wind up with Arrow.

WB might also be holding it back to time it (and others like IwaV) with the new film they are planning to produce with Cruise, if they can ever come to a budget agreement.

It would be distributed through Paramount but I wonder if AI: Artificial Intelligence would be in range for Criterion by now, having had Spielberg's direct participation on a recent release, and the releases of both Barry Lyndon and Eyes Wide Shut, feels like it makes sense now.

AI would be a nice addition to the collection.
I enjoyed Speilberg's participation on Criterion's I Wanna Hold Your Hand release as well as the upcoming EWS.

That or
Empire of the Sun would be wonderful. Allen Daviau’s work on that and Peter Weir’s
Fearless is just amazing
Whatever happened to
O Lucky Man! getting a release? I don’t think any 4K of it has screened anywhere

It’s been on my mind to do a rewatch for a while. I haven’t seen it in its entirety since its release. It does make a lot of sense for CC

I saw a restoration of O Lucky Man on the big screen back in November 2019. I don't know if it was a 4K scan but it looked fantastic.

A.I. would very likely be licensed thru WB since it was on the list of titles that they sent out on that survey asking which titles people would like to see upgraded to 4K.

I'm shocked that The Adventures of Robin Hood hasn't had a 4K release.
