The missing footage was destroyed by RKO long ago (part of the purge of Welles as he struggled to complete IT'S ALL TRUE & AMBERSONS) - a reconstruction would use stills...

"We're still looking for better materials on AMBERSONS. We waited for KONG and KANE and it was worth it. It will be worth it for the AMBERSONS, and yes,we will release JOURNEY INTO FEAR when we do AMBERSONS."

The Legend is that some of the missing footage might be found in South America. Due to Welles screening it while filming It's All True. What I would give if that footage ever turns up.

I am willing to lead an expidition to the jungles of South America to find the missing Amberson's footage. Who's with me?

COMPLETELY RANDOM: Criterion should release Song of the South, so Disney's logo isn't so prominant on the DVD... Then they don't have to worry about bad PR.

Song of the South is vastly overrated. Shows how notoriety can lead to a film becoming more important than it ever really was.

I think you just perceive it's overrated because of the notoriety. But it's a good film, no doubt and the notoriety has only given it a more important role in our history and culture.

I'm pretty sure that's just a cock-up on the press release, but if Henry V and Hamlet have new transfers, count me in.

I doubt that they are new transfers. It doesn't say 'new' high-definition digital transfers.

It is just a annual gift set.

No, because no matter what Disney's logo will always be on the DVD somehwere. Example: Disney records is always listed on the back of the DVD with the logo... At least that's how it is with Nightmare Before Christmas....,

My guess is that that's because the soundtrack to Nightmare Before Christmas is on the Disney record label.

There's no mention of Disney on most Touchstone releases (and no rule that there needs to be). Take, for example, O Brother, Where Art Thou?, 25th Hour, and Ed Wood.

Touchstone was created to create a disconnect in the minds of the public between Disney and releases which contain material that some might find questionable.

Recently I wrote JM to see if perhaps Criterion had plans to re-issue The Red Shoes or Black Narcissus in the wake of the new Warners French versions and the forthcoming UK Powell & Pressburger set. Here is what I got in response to my question:

We have no upgraded version planned for either of those films at this time. However, for future reference, our monthly newsletter will mention which films we will be re-releasing each time we come to such a decision. Matt's in charge of the newsletters... I got a response from Matt once as well.

Matt also helped me with a replacement disc one time.

I wonder if they finally killed off the Mulvaney character. That would explain why he hasn't responded to anything in a long time. This guy writes like him, and signs his emails "best". Matt Lipson = Mulvaney unmasked?

I reckon JM is a real person, who became fed up with rote replying, took a vacation saying he'd done his time and now wanted a meatier role in the company to develop further, or else he would move on...

I recently picked up F for Fake and it came without the booklet. I emailed Mulvaney a couple of weeks ago about it and just today received a response. It was from Matt Lipson as well.

Does anyone know if Criterion is releasing more Bertolucci? The Conformist is in need of a serious DVD release, as is Before the Revolution and 1900, though I think I remember someone saying that 1900 is Sony.
