they were ugly, huge, plastic monstrosities.

I wish the 2-disc cases were the same as the ones Masters of Cinema those are the nicest ones I've seen.

True but they do have something unique. I still think it`s a pity they don`t use them anymore...

I LOVE the new clear cases. I have always enjoyed them when other companies used them. I'm not really sure why I like them so much. They just have a slick look to them, and I love it when they provide artwork on the reverse side.

As for 2-disc cases, I am glad they no longer use the large cases that take up so much space. However, I'm not a huge fan of digi-packs either. I prefer the ones Warner Bros. uses, with the extra flap in the middle.

Thanks thethirdman. (Though I'm kind of disappointed. I was really hoping for digi-packs.)

I miss the wider 2-disc cases too. The problem with the ones with the flap in the middle is that it doesn't leave room for a thick booklet like the one Criterion usually includes in most of their releases. So they are stuck with the figure-eight cases which I hate.

They don't always include digipacks with tremendous booklets. Take The Third Man and The Spirit of the Beehive for instance.

I think Playtime and Spirit of the Beehive's packaging was more a matter of testing the waters...and somehow, the waters said that those silly figure eight packages were better. The Third Man, if you recall, was originally to be released around the same time as those two discs. I imagine that Criterion had a model for The Third Man's final packaging complete by then, and after 'delaying' the disc, decided to keep the overall design rather than switch to the figure eight.

Were it me, I would've retained as much of the look of the original Two-Lane Blacktop poster as possible. I'm not wild about this cover. Kinds reminds me of a trendy paperback reissue. This one comes immediately to mind:

The picture for the 415 slot on the Criterion website is being held by the Two-Lane Blacktop cover art. Maybe there's another release coming for December that hasn't been announced yet?

The Last Emperor is the best bet and a no-brainer for a Christmas release.

The Two-Lane Blacktop cover is quite ok.
I`m really impressed by the Bergman cover. Will be getting that without a doubt.

There's a really nifty (but coincidental) visual echo in the cover designs for the Bergman box and Two-Lane Blacktop.

We focus so hard on how the Criterion covers will look, that we even see visual echoes now. Next month someone will point out a pixel being distorted in color.
