I actually have Lola Montes but haven't watched it yet. So, it the bird reference has a nonliteral meaning for those who've seen it?

It could be any animal, it's more about the cage itself.

Probably because Lola is, metaphorically, a caged bird.

The place Anton Walbrook sets her up in might have a sort of big cage thing in the middle of it, but it's a bit like a bird cage, anyway. And there's a scene in the circus (when the little girl talks to her) where she puts on her make-up in a cage within a cage, or something like that. (You can tell I listened to the commentary on this one...) Not sure what the 'heat' refers to, though. Where's David Hare?

I predict a feature-length commentary track by that damned bird from Berlin Alexanderplatz.

Yes, it's a very birdcage-like structure. The "heat" I assume is because she's viewed as a trampy figure... "caged heat".

And the birds resemble trapeze artists, I guess.

I'm somewhat surprised that they gave away the name of the director in that drawing. A first-time thing, if I remember correctly. Good news, in any case.

Maybe it was a concession to how limp the clue was. Caged heat is more Corman than Ophuls in my book. Or maybe I'm being too literal.

If memory serves there was a clue about "a blast of silence from Guy Maddin" a couple of years ago.

And...

"Whit Stillman's first film gets it's coming out on DVD this year!"

"Look out for special editions of Louis Malle's Murmur of the Heart, Lacombe Lucien and Au revoir les enfants this Spring!"

And there was one of Buddha reciting a haiku about Ozu, but I forget the wording.

We all wasted so many weeks trying to decipher that one, too

Wait, that one's a Malle reference? Here I was thinking it was just an absurdist reference to upcoming Luis Buñuel releases...

Gee... eight and one half little dogs, and they're blue. I'm totally stumped. This clue isn't fair at all.

The dogs are bitches, so it must be 8 1/2 Women. And they said Greenaway wasn't looking good!

Bah, everyone knows the proper way to slice a dog in half is from head to paw, straight down the middle.
